My friend began as an HR Assistant, then moved upward as an HR Manager. In the course of our conversations, she taught me a lot about the whole field. How many employees do you have? If you have a fair number, you might want to actually hire either a full-time person, or look into something like Administaff.

You definitely need professional advice here. Nothing to knock the SUN forums but if you can afford to hire a consultant with great credentials, go right ahead. Strategy is also very important here. Let`s say you run a software company. Do you focus on hiring the best - period - or do you focus on hiring a few programming stars who can direct traffic so to speak and hire additional programmers more ordinary skills?

There are other questions such as advancement and compensation architectures, which if implemented properly can foster fairness in the workplace but can also piss people off, especially star performers who don`t want to be squeezed into a little HR box, or forced onto a path that really won`t work for them.

I can`t recommend any great consultants but I bet your lawyer can.

Thanks Guys. My business is a legal discovery service. We employ 20ish people, are heavily tech invested and our market is contained to workers` compensation attorneys in California. In the meantime I`m going to put my feelers out for an excelent HR consultant.

Hi - I am new to the group and just saw your post.  I am a human resources consultant with 14+ years experience.  There are many key human resources systems that companies with employees must have.  For example:  employee records, employee handbook, supervisor education (to avoid harassment, discrimination, etc.), employment law posters, and much more.  If you are still looking for someone to develop and implement HR systems, I’m very interested in talking. Thanks!  www.golimbo.com
