I`m not sure if this is something that is common elsewhere, but I thought I`d get some opinions on a new law that has recently passed here in Alberta, Canada.  As of July 1st 2008, it is against the law to display any tobacco products or containers with marketing messages or logos from tobacco companies in any retail outlet.  As well Drug stores/pharmacies are prohibited from selling any tobacco products at all.

I personally quit smoking about 4 years ago, and wonder now what took me so long.  However, I`m not sure if I agree with this method of anti-tabacco maneuvering by government.  Its like making tobacco "semi-illegal".  You may as well just make it illegal and offer free medical assistance to all who need it.  Store owners have had to go out an get special cabinets built to hide all tabacco products, and smokers have to guess what products there are available, or even if a given retail outlet sells tobacco products.

What do you think??

Yup...major problem that few people relate to themselves. The most common disclaimer is, "I don`t smoke....but...."

It isn`t about smoking. It isn`t about tobacco, and it isn`t about sales. It`s about which comes first---cause, or effect. It`s about the nature of reality, and it`s about freedom and private ownership.

Smokers, gun-owners, overland truckers, teachers, and many other "groups" are under attack these days. Mostly, I think it`s because of an overriding and narcissitic belief (feeling) that nobody is personally responsible for their own actions and choices.

If that`s true (it isn`t, but suppose it is), then there "must be" a reason that life has pain, suffering, misery, and damage. The "reason" must be something other than their own actions and choices. To that end, society looks outward at groups of people who are "causing" the misery and pain.

"Junk science" and propaganda now are trusted more than facts and actual evidence. Feelings are considered an accurate method of determining truth and reality, and facts themselves are considered personal opinions.

Here`s an article on the reality of secondhand smoke, which is the foundation for all the ensuing laws against private ownership, freedom of action, and so forth. It won`t change anyone`s "opinion," and society will continue to make long-term decisons based on nothingness and feelings.

As all this picks up speed, we`ll see more such groups come under attack and regulation. We live in a world where the minority has more weight than the majority, and so there are things like victim`s rights organizations springing up, along with right-to-die groups, and so on.

Personally, I think this is history in motion. We`ll lose more freedoms and be more regulated until eventually we`ll be in a socialist culture. At that point, people will finally get around to reacting against it all, and saying no to this kind of inanity. But not for awhile yet.

I definitely believe that is a path we are headed down.  However, I do also believe that "the people" will not allow it to get to point of socialism.  Another point to consider is enforcement.  You can only enforce so many laws before the system wieghs so heavily on itself it collapses.

A couple possibilities to consider.  Big changes are coming to this world, but I like to remain a bit of an optimist.

Wheres the line??

The people themselves will vote in a socialist government, not understanding that`s what they`re doing. Only after they`ve done so will they realize they end up with "unintended" consequences. At that point, it`ll be too late and the only resolution likely will be some sort of violence.

Craig you have hit it right on the head with that one. I am afraid of the direction that our society is heading. We are allowing ourselves to be led down a very dangerous primrose path that will result in a great loss of freedom for each and every one of us.

After we have allowed the `officials` to `protect` us from ourselves we will not be able to conduct our business in any manner that we desire, or even know to be the most productive. We are selling our souls and the results will be most unfortunate in the near future.  I talk to my Grandchildren every day and hopefully will make a difference in their lives. I have also created my own Life Story for them when they are older that will hopefully instill and motivate them to reject the loss of freedoms that they are going to experience, due to our passive acknowledgement of these changes in our society.
