I am a stay home Dad who would like to start a consulting business part-time.  This business is truly more about getting back into the real world, then making money.  However, I do not wish to work as a volunteer, as I would like to earn some money.  My question is how do I protect my home and life savings from any potential legal actions.  No, I do not forsee that as being an issue, however I`d hate to have a part-time endeavor possibly risk my families well being.

Incorporate.

What do you plan to do? What is the business?

I agree with Keycon. Incorporate your business. Also, liability insurance is always a good idea.

Good luck!

You can set up an LLC. That gives you legal protection, but also pass-thru
tax advantages. Your situation may be different, but in the past I have been
able to reduce my taxable income from my job because of the losses
assosiated with start up costs for the LLC.

But I`m not a lawyer. Check with one first.

I agree with Joel, I have an LLC and in the next few months will add two more, and move all of them under one corperate strucure.  When you do start, look at both a personal and a business umbrella insurance policy.  They are inexpensive and great protection to help limit your liability and exposure.
