My wife and I own and operate an Errand Service company. We have been in business for a year now and in order to grow we need to hire an employee to take on additional clients.

We are not taking a salary at this time, but the business supports its self. We do not have enough money after the business expenses are paid to put some one on the payroll.

How do we hire and train someone, with only one or two hours a week to give them until we get more clients?

Aaron,

I live in your area and am trying to start my own concierge service.  If you are interested I would like to offer to help you.

Let me know.

How do you know it is a good business, if the revenue only covers the raw cost without paying yourself? It sounds like you are giving people your time for free?

Do you have any neighbors or their kids who have extra time? any stay at home moms?, family or friends that would help out? This may work until you get enough work to actually hire your first employee.

Try local colleges and offer an intern position.  You do not have to pay the intern for services because they will gain experience in marketing, customer service and how to become an entrepreneurial.

To JohnQH`s point, how is this a good business model if revenue equals expenses?  In theory, as you continue to grow the business, your expenses will grow with your revenue.  Obviously you have some fixed expenses that would be better absorbed by higher volume, however the nature of the business does not appear as though it would have high overhead costs.
One recommendation would be to partner with some businesses you frequent for your clients.  You could either get a percentage of the revenue you bring in, or you could offer these businesses your services.  One example would be a local dry cleaner who might not have a delivery option.  You could be that delivery option that the owner could start offering clients.  Just of thought to boost your revenue and accelerate your growth so you can hire more employees.
