I have been biking and riding the bus for the last 2 years. I bought and electric hub motor but battery life up hill with SLA`s doesn`t get you far and pulling around and extra 45LBS doesn`t sit well ( I was riding up a slight grade for eleven miles and usually into a head wind). Electric works well for short trips and until battery tech becomes more affordable few are going to shell out close to $1,500 for a set of poly batteries. So the electric motor went to my son`s bike and I just use it for short trips. I bought a 4-stroke engine kit and have well over 1,500 miles on it with no problems. I went with a 4-stroke over 2-stroke because you can fill up at any gas station and don`t need to pre-mix your fuel also the torque characteristics of a 4-stroke are stronger. I now sell these kits and build motorized bicycles. What I want to do is make these machines more user friendly as I write this you need to have some mechanical knowledge to install one on a bike. Support is almost nonexistent, my plan is to setup shops that build and maintain these bikes.
Gas millage is between 130 and 150 MPG with speeds between 30 to 35 MPH. Alcohol is another fuel option that I will experiment with in the future, diesel engines would be nice but I think weight will be prohibitive, possible a recumbent trike may work. Hybrids have and weight issue but there is a super capacitor  that may be available in the next few years and could work to make electrics have greater range. The advantage with motorized bikes is most states don`t require license, registration or insurance these alone would pay for a bike in a year, take into consideration the rising cost of gas and some could pay for a motorized bike in a month.

These are all great solutions!  As we all know gas and other petroleum product prices continue to climb, even though our President does not seem to get out enough to realize it.  This is going to affect the price of everything.  Being in the shipping industry, I could not know this any better than I do today.  It is affecting Internet businesses and other transportation dependent retailers big time.  I hear this from my customers and others daily.

We can all change this trend if we really want to.  For example did you know that the US alone could save 462 million gallons of gasoline a year by increasing cycling from 1% to 1.5% of all trips?  For this reason my company car is from Trek.  Biking to work is great for many reasons other than just saving gas and the environment - fitness and well being just for starters can be added to this list.  I think of many of my best ideas come to me as I am away from things on my bike.

Gas prices are a wake up call and we all need to do more now.  Biking and waking to work is a good start but it is only a small beginning.  How we set up and use our computers and other electric devices makes a difference.  How we run our businesses on a daily basis makes a difference.  And how we produce products, package them and get them to market makes a huge difference in our overall oil consumption.

I hear and read about a lot of great ideas every day but we seem to be using oil more than ever.  So are we just talking and not doing?  I think part of the problem is we are willing talk about it because it is the in thing to do, but most do not seem to be doing anything because it inconveniences our busy lives and it is change.  Most people do not like to change.  But, change is good for an entrepreneur.  As an entrepreneur I find these problems interesting because I also feel that the act of solving problems like these creates business opportunity.  We just need to get more entrepreneurs to get on the same page.  If for no other reason to make money…

Bert,
You seen to be one of the few out there who has his head on really stright.  There are a lot of talkers and nor many doers!  I try to be a doer.  I am having to move back home to help care for my parents; their in their mid 80`s and still heat with wood.  I am building a house out of soy based foam blocks (R factor 50 plus), putting solar panals on te roof, creating hydrogen in the day and electricity at night. I am also putting up an virtical shaft wind powered generator 1K output).  I`ll feed excess electricity back into the grid. I`ll also raise a garden, chickens rabbits and a pig.  I have a 40cc gasoline engine on my bicycle which I entend to convert to run on hydrogen.

Mike,

That is all very interesting and very cool.  I bet there is a book in all you are doing that you could share with others.  You should at least start a blog or web site and tell sites like treehugger.com about it.  Not many are doing all those things and I am sure others would like to know about your successes.

My company has set up a web page where we are starting to list green solutions mainly for business, but many of the links cover personal solutions.  You might want to check it out and see if there are any things you don`t already know about.  It is at http://www.harveysoft.com/green.htm.  We have been adding to it monthly as a public service and have big plans for it in the future.  I feel the important thing is to not only do it for your benefit, but to tell others how they can share in your successes.

Bert
