While I agree that bootstrapping is a viable alternative - I sometimes think a better (more descriptive) term would be "shoe-stringing"(?).
So prompted by your post, I went off to see how others defined the term. Not surprisingly, there are several that use words like "minimal", "zero", "cheap" - even one that uses "shoestring" in the definition.
Here is one that doesn`t include those terms which I submit for your comments.
BOOTSTRAPPING: A situation in which an entrepreneur starts a company without outside capital. An individual is said to be boot strapping when he or she attempts to start and build a company from personal finances or from the operating revenues of the new company.
