I recently started a blog that covers startups - particularly seed-stage startups. I like to focus on self-funded rather than larger, VC funded companies.

When I write about a startup, I usually email to let them know about the published post.

However, do you think its a better idea to email startups before writing about them? Perhaps even run the write-up by them before I hit the publish button?

I can imagine that few startups would have the time to respond to queries from small blogs.

What is the right way to go about this?

I write about startups at AvocadoPress.com If you're building something interesting, need some feedback, or would just like to chat, drop me an email at puranjay at avocadopress.com. I usually respond to all emails.

Hi there,

Personally I think you should email the startups to let them know that you're going to write about them before you actually did. Though you may not need their permit to public the article, but it will be nice if they know it in advance. Startup owners are usually busy but I think they do cherish everyone who pays attention to them and may get back to you for further cooperation.

Hi puranjay,

I would write them before and after you write the article.  By writing to them before you may learn something new or gain access to an exclusive story or information.  By writing to them afterwords they may use the article on there website thus helping promote you and your blog.  It is also good to stay in touch for networking purposes.  If the blog is well written and positive you never know what type of business relationship it may lead to.
