I`m planning my first internet store, and need a good hosting service.  I`m not looking for the cheapest, but a good value.

Here`s some of the features I know I want/need -

-Wide range of templates -I`ve considered doing my own site, or paying to have a custom site build, but think if I go with a host that has a lot of templates - and flexibility within those templates  I can make a site unique enough for my needs.

-Easy Store Maintenence - I want to be able to add/remove product listings, show promotional items etc.

-Easy integration with a merchant account (BTW - I need recommendations for good merchants - I`m expecting low volume, and low $$ amounts so I need a merchant that caters to to the little guy)

-Able to handle promotional codes. (product discounts)
-Able to do gift certificates
-Support of a public forum
-Allow users to upload photos
-Able to manage customer/contact lists (Newletter, Promotions, etc)

I`m not sure many `hosts` would offer all of these modules as a service or a template.  However, what you may want to look at is something like dropping Drupal onto your `hosted` site.

I think you might be confusing the hosting company with your hosting platform.  I`d check out www.bluehost.com - best I`ve come across.  As for the platform, you should check out Wordpress.org and possibly use it at least for the CMS aspect.

Yes it seems you are possibly talking about 2 separate things.

For platform I would second Wordpress.org.

For hosting I use A Small Orange and would recommend them.

I also always hear good things about Hostgator.

Thanks Guys - now can you help me understand what the differences are in Platform vs. Host?

Hi,

Hosts are companies that provide space on a server that they own for people to use for their own websites.

A platform is simply what you build your website on, such as Wordpress, Movable Type, etc.

I use Yahoo Small Business as my host and Yahoo Sitebuider to produce my web site.  I use my site primarily as a referral for potential clients to review writing samples and training guides.  Sitebuilder also allows me to update my site without having to pay someone to provide this service.  Sitebuilder has a lot of features as well, but may not be right for your needs.  However, it`s worth looking at as a starting point.  It has tutorials that explain the process and terms involved in site building.

How small of a product line are you talking? This is actually very important when considering the solution you will be choosing. I am actually working with one client on using Wordpress to make a storefront - I`d be happy to elaborate for you if you want.

Also - HostGator is a great host.
