OK...this is perhaps THE most important habit you can
have if you want to succeed in EVERY area of your life.

Goal Setting

It is almost impossible to overestimate the value of
goal-setting as a positive habit. It can truly be life
changing!

Research studies have shown that people who regularly
set goals are far more likely to be successful then
people who do not. Napoleon Hill, author of the
best-seller, Think and Grow Rich, once said,
"Definiteness of purpose is the starting point of all
achievement, and its lack is the stumbling block for
ninety eight out of every one hundred people because
they never really define their goals and start toward
them."

A study was done to determine the importance of goal
setting.
College students who had gone on to achieve great
success in business were asked to list their habits.
The students who had made a habit of setting goals were
in the top 3% of earnings in the population!

Goal setting is simple, yet 97% of the population never
do it. By making goal setting a habit, you can start
placing yourself in the top 3% of the population of
successful people. Your goal-setting habit can help you
reach any of your goals, regardless of whether they are
for business, personal, relationships, and so on.

Here are some simple steps to help you start your goal-setting
habit:

Step 1 Define your destinations, write them down, and
be very specific; capture your goals on paper.

Step 2 Determine what the time line is for reaching your
goals; set specific deadlines for each goal.

Step 3 Identify any obstacles that may stand in your way,
list them, and state how you plan to overcome them.

Step 4 Make a list of the people and/or organizations
who will help you reach your goals.

Remember....invest in yourself and you will go places FAST!

Make today an AWESOME day !!!

I`d like to see something in there about "attainable" goals. THE single most destructive thing someone can do to themselves is to set unrealistic or unattainable goals, then buy into the critical necessity of attaining all their goals. When they can`t reach what they`ve set, they blame themselves, start to think of themselves as a failure, and generally get really annoyed.

I`d also like to see a reference to adaptation. Too often life calls for a change in plans.

But having the concept of goals is indeed fundamental. The interesting paradox is that if your goal is to define your destination, and you lack the discipline to set goals, how would you make it a goal to learn to set goals? :-)

The problem with goal setting is that people set goals and forget about them completely, sit in front of the TV and do nothing.  I`ve read somewhere that:

"The most important thing isn`t goal setting, but goal getting!"

I`ve been very guilty of this, but improving on it every day.

I`m trying to find out if there`s such a disease as Gonna-rea. So many people say, "I`m gonna do this, gonna do that, gonna, gonna, gonna," it`s gotta be a legit disease, right? Any MD`s in the house?

Goal setting without a definite chief aim is pointless. You gotta have "want to." A life plan (see 10 steps here at SuN) is a great place to start.

Don`t get me wrong - I`m a big goal setter ... in fact, I`m a big believer in the BHAG - Big Hairy Audacious Goals.

Here`s a trick ... remember your high school English class and creating an outline. Always start at the top and work your way down - step by step ... it ain`t brain surgery

I think the key to avoiding this problem is to set a variety of goals. Surely some of them will be attainable. All it takes is a few successes to fire people up.

Richard, I love BHAGs. Just the other day I was telling my business partner (aka wife) about a particular BHAG. You may be right,I may be crazy, but I`m having a blast.

This is totally true! Setting aside the process of making goals, too many people just have no goals at all. Then they set one or two, and make them nearly impossible, or worse, make them goals that depend on pure luck or magic.

All of us should have an interesting enough life to have that variety of goals Steve mentions. It`s hard for me to understand those who don`t, but that`s maybe why I write about the problem. Either way, it seems to me that setting goals is like investing in the stock market or other portfolios, only this is investing in your own life. It`s better to have some diversity than to put all one`s eggs in a single basket.

There`s a fantastic exercise coming from a sort of New-Age ideology, that involves making two lists on a piece of paper, with a line between them. On the left is the To Do list. These are those things you for sure expect to get done in no more than 48 hours.

The second list, on the right side is for "The Universe." These are the things you want to do, but have no real idea how to accomplish. The only caveat is that when those items are phrased, they should be only in positive words, not what you "don`t want," but what you do want.

It works because it removes from immediate attention span those things that are complicated, and therefore taking up space in that attention area of the mind. It isolates those things that are definitely going to get done, from those that you want done, but won`t get so involved with in terms of "how" right this moment.

What`s interesting is that in so many cases, people do this, and a year later go back to look at their "universe" list. All those things that seemed either impossible or highly unlikely---all were accomplished. It`s amazing what you can do when you set your mind to it! Oh...wait... let me write that down, it really sounds profound! :-D

This is directed at some folks who replied to a post a week or so ago about goal setting or resolutions. I made reference to a Goal Sheet we use in my Vistage group. I made an offer to send it to anyone who requested it.

Anyway, one young lady sent a request and I deleted the email - I apologize. If my memory serves me correct, she had an email address that had something to do with Starbucks in Canada.

I hope you see this message and resend you request to me. I will send the Goal Sheet along. Anyone else can request it, too. Helps you set your goals for the coming year.

Send an email to keycon@mindspring.com

Thanks - R@
