Interesting mission, you must be receiving a lot of flack from your colleagues.  My long experience with realtors is they promote massive amounts of development in Florida at the expense of the environment.  Energy wasting, deforestation, wildlife extinction, pollution, dewatering and wetland destruction is the plan of the day for most people in your industry and the Florida government.  You should be applauded for your efforts, if they are sincere...

I thought the same thing until I found and read what they had to say on the site; I think development is inevitable but they seem to address it with "green" in mind (money and environmental) and that`s better than not at all. I`m a skeptic but could even see the logic to their green mortgages and land brokerage stuff as it`s presented with more than just money in mind.

I have worked with or for several developmental groups in Florida over the years that have all claimed to be environmentally sound.  So far I have seen none that really did anything good in the long run.  They just made a few people rich at the expense runaway development acting like environmentalist with only a few exceptions.  It is really sad to see how poorly things have evolved over the last 30 years here in Southwest Florida.  I feel guilty for just living here now even though I have fought local environmental mismanagement the whole time.  It is really sad what we have done to Florida’s environment.  Florida is slowly evolving from Green to Brown...

It`s the same here in AZ where we`re going from brown to green; I don`t get how some sleep at night.  I took the time to find out what that guy was talking about because I thought it was "green spoof" but changed my mind on it after reading the overall position (if the users actually follow and all that jazz is something else indeed).

Still not sure if "Glad to be `Green`" is about selling or living green, or just a topic on feeling good about being environmental (it`s bad and not glad state as there`s so few bright shining lights) ... and I`m not sure if every service or product can even be green(er), but I`m convinced many will try to at least market as such (e.g., Exxon seems kind of evil to me) ... but I did think these forums are more about products than politics (is it possible to split the 2?~)

Bert,

Actually I don`t get any flack about it from my associates. Some really agree with what I`m doing and others respect me for it whether they agree or not.I`ve gotton people who never gave it a second thought to really start giving this some serious thought. I`m sorry you had so much bad experience with realtors, hopefully not to the point where the ones of us who are sincere in what we do are prejudged. As for my sincerety in this, I consider my time, money and reputation too valuable to waste on something that I`m not passionate about.

If my clients are not interested in the environment, at least for the most part I can convince them they doing certain things like saving energy, cleaner air quality, etc. will benefit them by saving money and greater comfort level. If saving the environment is not a motivator, then saving money usually is.

Chris,

Thank you for taking the time to look it over before just dismissing the idea. It is a great start in trying to make a difference, and that`s what I`m trying to do is to make a positive difference. EcoBroker.com has a lot of info on our mission, not sure if that`s where you read about it or not.

Sherry,

I think your efforts are great.  I am sorry to hear your clients do not see its value.  I am sure market demands from clients like that have been a big part of all the environmental and energy problems we have in Florida and the US today.  Just to be clear, I have not had a bad experience with realtors.  I guess I am blaming the messenger when they only were the sales people for the developers that have destroyed so much in Florida.  I hope you keep up the good work and good luck!

Bert

I actually asked the manufacturers I chose to re-formulate their products so for me they would be 100% organic and 95% vegan and to guarantee that if I had the products tested they would come up 100% organic and 95% vegan.  I wont have paper catalogs and when I am ready to rent or buy space I will make sure it is as green as green can be.  The only reason I am not 100% green personally is the cost, but that is my goal 100% green, or as close to that as I can get.

I guess everyone is getting on the "Green" band wagon including Real-estate Agents. I checked out http://www.ecobroker.com/default.aspx  it may work for the Agents.

Last night I attended an event for Global Green USA www.globalgreen.org & Green Building Resource Center in Santa Monica, California. It was very informative in what is available to the public & business. I see an important part of the future for Real-estate Agents, in educating their clients on Environmental Resources for "Sustainable & Green Living".

By learning about creating healthier homes & work spaces, they put them selves a step ahead of other agents. I found quite a lot of the products simple to use & or install, affordable, natural, & beautiful. They have list of Architects, Contractors, Developers, & Real-estate Agents, etc. They are giving classes & have a book out "Blueprint for Greening Affordable Housing" I bought the book & going to read it.

Here is another site to check out; Livingreen Store & Gallery, www.livingreen.com located in Culver City & Santa Barbara, California.

All the Best,

One of the things I think needs to be clarified is the definition of a Green Business.  There are a ton of web sites and business out there giving it a stab.  I think this is great!  Many are doing it because it is a business opportunity since it is “in” to be Green right now.  This makes me skeptical.  I found this web site today and I feel it`s “About Us” section has a good definition of a Green Business:

http://www.greenbiz.ca.gov

Being a Green Business is more than just doing one thing.  It requires a change in many habits and things we all think we cannot live without.  I do not agree.  The truth is we do not need to do without.  We just need to change our priorities and our desires.  Creating a Green Business is just like any other business venture.  Talking about it is a good way to plan and come up with good ideas.  Doing the plan and adjusting for mistakes along the way is what it takes to get the job done.  Many people need to stop talking for marketing reasons and start doing.  I am really happy to see so many at SuN doing exactly this in very innovative ways.

I think we all know we are really just getting started.  In some of my recent posts, I have been talking about irresponsible development in Florida and I want to share with you some of the results we are experiencing.

http://www.news-press.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=20077092 00361

This is only one of many issues in South Florida we are facing because businesses put making money at the expense of the environmental above all else.  Sadly many of them that did the damage claimed to be environmentally friendly as they did their dirty work.  Now many of those that have done the damage have taken their money and ran.  Those left behind are now facing the potential of a terrible wild fire season, shortages in fresh water supply and an ever decreasing wetlands in the up coming winter months.  This is because, even though we have received rain, our area has been so severely drained that our normal dry seasons are now very bad.  This is not Green Business and why I am so skeptical when companies say they are in this area.
