I`m a webmaster by trade, and yet, I don`t design have of my own sites. In fact, when I ran a web design company, I outsourced 100% of the work to folks overseas.
One site I used to find designers was getafreelancer.com to locate the designers/programmers I work with now.
It shouldn`t take months to get an e-commerce site built, in my opinion, with all the technologies available, one should be able to fully start processing online within a few weeks and depending on the size of the project, an e-commerce site can be enabled and ready to go within days.
One of my niche sites that pretty much take care of itself was designed and online within 2 days - taking and processing credit card orders in real time and everything: http://www.thatblanket.com
One day for the design and another day for the content and ecommerce implementation...now obviously, if you`re selling 500+ products, thaats a different story.
Just to give u an idea, I paid the guy $50 bucks to design the site for me...he sent me a proof of the layout and 2 hours later, he sent me the html code and the psd files and it was done. All I had to do was plug in my content...(for an extra $50 bucks --- send them the content and they`ll input it in there) I`m a control freak and like to do that stuff myself.
That`s one of 50+ sites I have online and most typically take 1-3 days to get up after the concept has been thought off.
Sometimes, I`ll wake up in the middle of the night with an idea and will email my guy some directions and when I wake up 4-6 later, he`ll have me a proof...(actually, I had one of those nights this past Sunday night) and the site is already complete.
In other words...just get started. Don`t wait months until everything is just right, just get started and tweak and modify as you go.
Just my .02 cents worth
