One of the most divisive aspects of today`s America is so-called political correctness. The ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) jumped on the bandwagon, using this modern philosophy tool to begin actions against religion.

The tool is "deconstructionism," meaning that nothing in life has meaning other than whatever feeling and opinion anyone assigns. It`s the foundation of the expression that everyone has their own opinion, and goes one step further: everyone`s opinion is equally valid.

The "secular" movement is designed to eliminate all references to religion in society, under the guise of separation of Church and State. From the Constitution. Oddly enough, the movement elevates Islam to a high priority, and focuses mostly on Judeo-Christian religion.

Since American morality and ethics tend mostly to derive from the Christian religion, the secular movement is a direct attack on those moral values. The problem is that the ACLU, philosophy professors, and academic speakers have nothing as a replacement.

It`s fine to tear down what exists. But without replacing it, then what`s left? Nothing.

Here`s a clear case of exactly this type of philosophic and legal warfare.

The site and video load a bit slowly, but give it the time and watch the video. It`s about a case on its way to the Supreme Court, where the ACLU is demanding the tearing down of a WW I veteran`s memorial because of its shape -- a cross.

If this case holds up, then an interesting problem will be what to do with all the crosses at such places like Arlington National Cemetery.

Is this the America we want to live in? I`m not particularly religious, but I accept that any society needs some form of moral structure. A legal system should follow a moral system. It should never create that moral system!

The level of separation of church and state is too low, as it is. The government shouldn`t legislate morality, but it does. If the ACLU goes too far, it`s perfectly fine, because the religious right would love to legislate us back to Puritanism. Somebody has to fight it. Protection of Marriage Act, Ten Commandments in state capitals, fighting for creationism to be taught as science - it has to be stopped. If that means some collateral damage, so be it. You don`t see Hindus demanding the Upanishads and Baghavad Ghita be taught in science class. You don`t see Buddhists putting the Fivefold Path in state supreme courts. Heck, for all the extremism in the rest of the world, you don`t see American Muslims trying to institute Sharia Law. It`s Christian fundamentalists that the ACLU is fighting, and they`re not winning.

We should tear down, and not build, any war "monuments" for lots of reasons.  Vietnam war wall, etc.  If you want to honor vets, pay them more while they serve.  After they are dead, it is a bit late.

Craig,

Once again, I`m amazed (and shouldn`t be) at the level of ignorance in our entrepreneurial ranks
of the source of our American freedoms.

From one of the comments above, what seems to be missing from common understanding is that the Constitution guarantees freedom OF religion, not from it.

Good post.

The entire secular movement (anti-religion) is directly connected with such things as the "green" movement, "climate change," and health-care reform. ALL of it is a complex and philosophic attack on the fundamental principles of individual liberties.

At issue is the importance and priority level between the individual and the society. At the moment, society is considered to be more important than the individual.

That`s not how this country was founded, but that`s the situation we`re dealing with today. How it will resolve will write the next segment in history.
