I just bought a domain and have started building a classified website. I am hosting it on pagebuzz because they have a complete classified program, so I don`t have to do anything except set it up and advertise.

Well, I have set it up, now I don`t have anyone placing ads.

How do I get traffic from the search engine? I would like to have at least 50 new ads a day if possible.

Driving traffic is the hardest part of a webiste.  You should position yoursef as an expert in classified copy.  Trade free tips on writing a better add in exchage for joining your email list, with that list you can send a weekly "newsletter" highlighting some of the things that are listed on your site.  This will help things sell and keep your site in front of the people who are likely to visit.

Hi EmptyPockets,
Shutter is right, driving natural traffic is very difficult however there are a few things you can do to start the process. Traffic can be driven to your site a number of ways including rankings. Here`s some tips on rankings to create traffic:
  • Make sure you are indexed in all the major search engines. If no, just submit your main domain to the engines
  • As Shutter said position yourself as an expert or create/find a niche industry to target.
  • Look for directories, search engines, websites within that niche and ask for a link. Traffic via other website links work.
  • Write articles, tips, techniques for your targeted industries with a link back to your website.
  • Lastly, create a buzz for your site. Get onto blogs and forums and get your site out there!
Keep in mind that building natural search traffic takes time and it`s an ongoing process so don`t get discouraged.

Good Luck,
Dan

Driving traffic to your new web site is one of the most difficult things to do unless you have deep pockets and are willing to spend lots of money paying for paid submission [Adwords] but if you do? what are they going to get? blank advertising pages?
I think before you start on your search engine submission dilemma, it would be wise to get some advertisers to post on your web site... Even if it`s for free until you get people interested on your services. Once you`ve reached a good audience of at least 50 free subscribers, then you can perhaps start charging them 10.00 bucks an ad or so. But at this point in your classified business it would be a waste of money if you Work on climbing up the Search Engine Ladder to come to a blank page.
Another thing you can do is, offer your services to people within the Community.. Perhaps your other route to start generating traffic is by linking to other businesses web sites... for example they post a classified ad on your system, and the more links you build the more relevant the search engines would consider your web site, and the cheaper it would be for you in the long run...
Just something to consider....

You need to read the SEOBook. (SEOBook.com)...I`m not affiliated with them, but it`s a good resource.

Is this a general classifieds site, or for a niche market? Local, national, beyond? Makes a big difference in how you target who would use it.

Actually, this statement is incorrect.  Driving traffic to your site isn`t difficult.  It`s a lot of  work but it`s not difficult.

Maybe driving qualified traffic would be what is difficult.

I guess you could just run around posting links everywhere, but who needs traffic that isn`t qualified?

Note:  Apparently you have to be special to use html signatures...
