Need some help and opinions from everyone.  I am used to designing my webpages in FrontPage 2003, and as everyone probably knows, FrontPage is no more.  My questions are:
1 - What would your personal choice be for a new program to develop webpages?
2 - Would you prefer LINUX or Windows based hosting?
3 - Does anyone have any experience building your own server in-house and hosting your own sites instead of paying for hosting?

Any replies are appreciated, along with any ideas/suggestions.

Thanks!!

Tony

Well there are various types HTML editors out there. If you ask me, I would tell you to stick to notepad. But then again I don`t know what your level of experience is when it comes to hand coding a web site. So I would suggest going with DreamweaverCS3 or Coffee Cup HTML editor.
As for the hosting question, it depends who you are developing for. I would go with Linux Hosting, since it`s more stable than windows. Plus 90% of blogs and web applications are written in PHP and MYSQL [this doesn`t mean you can`t host them on a Windows server] But it makes things much easier to manage under a Linux plan.
Ok, if you are trying to host these on your own server, it`s going to be very expensive.. Consider your Light bill, Do you have a back up generator in case the power goes out? What`s your level of expertise in Managing servers? What if your server goes down?
To be honest get a reseller hosting plan where you pay a monthly fee and you don`t worry about anything but collecting your payments.
I have reseller hosting accounts, Are you interested?

Ditto of what Edgar said

Microsoft Expression, the program that replaced FrontPage, is ok. I believe there is a free trial if you want to check it out. The advantage to using it, is if you are familiar with FP there is less of a learning curve than switching to Dreamweaver or another HTML editor.

One of the decision factors is if you want or need a WYSIWYG (what you is is what you get)program - so you can see what the results are before you upload the html to the host.

Most programs now are fairly good at generating cross-browser compatible code and CSS friendly.

As for hosting - reseller is the easiest way to get into hosting.

VW,
Speaking about Expression. Have you tried it out yet? I know two years ago Microsoft was giving it away for free. I had it installed on one of the machines but never cared to learn it. One of the major factors that I noticed is that it writes the code for IE browsers only. And although, 85% of the population [according to my google analytics] use IE web sites do not render correctly in Mozilla Firefox, Safari, Opera, nor Netscape [deprecated].
Now here is another issue that you have to address. Safari has a Windows version of their browser and so does Opera although the web sites look good in the Windows Architecture they don`t when it comes to MAC.

So VATony,
I would suggest that you go with something common like DreamweaverCS3
How you master the program depends on your level of HTML experience. I`ve been using Dreamweaver and Homesite since Dreamweaver Dev4 came out. I`ve seen the changes: some good some bad. But never the less, it cuts development time in half.
So here are your Options for you to choose.
Those are your three options unless you want to go with Expressions...

I have not done much with it (Expressions). Actually Epressions is more cross browser friendly than FP versions.

In fact, you can view your Expressions web creations in a number of browser - right from the Expressions program. Not only multiple browsers but also browser settings (640, 800, 1024).

I`d just go to Nvu, since it`s a sort of clone of DreamWeaver, but completely free.

CraigL,
I heard of NVU, but one thing you have to look at is: How is their support? If you want something free you can use "Notepad" completely free... all you have to do is open notepad and create an html file so instead of having "index.txt" call it "index.php" or "index.html" and there you are.

Completely free, just make sure you can code manually. Which is more fun than WYSIWYG editor. But Dreamweaver gives you codeview / split/ and design view.
Which allow you to work how ever you feel comfortable.

Nvu has a whole lot of online community support, including reference materials. Notepad has none.

Nvu is both a WYSIWYG editor and a source-code editor. Notepad is only source code, with no help at all about HTML.

Nvu has a built-in CSS editor, and right-click property dialog boxes for inline CSS styling. Notepad has nothing.

Nvu offers entire site management and FTP capabilities, which I don`t particularly use, but they`re there: Notepad is a text editor. Nvu also offers basic code validation, and 4 different ways to view the results, Notepad doesn`t even have spell-check.

If you don`t know HTML, and anyone using Front Page likely isn`t that expert, then Notepad is pretty much meaningless. But Nvu is an Web site development tool, not a text pad.

indeed it is,
But did you know that`s how old programmers used to do it back in the days. There was no such thing as an editor or a WYSIWYG, back in the days it was either you knew your stuff or you didn`t.
Now, I am not putting NVU down, but again you get what you pay for "YGWYPF", like CraigL Mentioned it is all basic: Basic CSS editor, Basic Code Validation, Basic, Basic, Basic.
Once you master your skills are you going to settle for less? Of course not you`re going to seek something more powerful more advanced and DreamweaverCS3 has all the tools you need.
You have Spry objects [spry does not validate, yet], you have advanced CSS editor, Advanced HTML Validator, XML  integration,  Image  Manipulation, Code view/split view/ and design view. Two architectures Designer or developer and so much more.
