How much does it cost to run and maintain a forum such as this?

I don`t know about operating costs but if you "hire" SuNBassadors to help you for free, you can cut some of those costs.  :)

I am inverstigating setting up a Forum; but quite different to this one.
The Forum I have looked at which has the functions I want is around USD$6,000 to set up and then USD$3,000 per annum to maintain.

Ric: Is your set-up cost based on outsourcing the web development side of things?

Steve: can you tell me more about SuNBassadors?  How exactly would such a service be "free?"

Here is a link explaining StartupNations`s SuNBassadors.  I`m one of them so my answer was mostly tongue-in-cheek.

He`s kidding ... basically, getting volunteers to help you with your community participation is what he`s saying.

Your costs depend on how good you want it to be. What people don`t consider is that a site like this would take a couple of people full time to admin over the content, create promotions, keep the flow going, remove offensive and spam content. This does not cover programming tasks. You can do it without the admin people, but it won`t be very good.

Yes; it would be up and ready to go.
But it is VERY different to this site.
Much like a php site on steroids!
The site would be fee-based where m clients and subscribers would pay USD$250 per year or USD$595 Lifetime Memebership.
