Hello, I'm hoping someone can help with this issue. I have an LLC, formed in Michigan, which I use to sell a card game I created. I now want to create 2 additional businesses: one for freelance writing and the other to sell business books. My CPA told me that I could form the 2 additional businesses as DBAs under the LLC (so, the game company DBA the book company, the game company DBA the freelance writing company), but I can't figure out how this would work. In Michigan, you file an assumed name/DBA with the county, but there doesn't seem to be a provision to do so under an LLC.

You can file a Certificate of Assumed Name with the state in Michigan. The form you need is here. A complete listing of resources for starting a business in Michigan is on our website.

Depending on your risk tolerance and the expectations of each business, you may be better off forming separate LLCs for each of the companies. By putting the other DBAs under the same LLC, a liability from one company will affect the other two.

You may want to do a name search to make sure there is no corporation or LLC in your state using the name you want to use. I've seen people go as far as printing cards only to find out they needed to use a new name.

you can do a name search with the states office or local county or do one online for free http://www.myllc.com/corporate-name-check.aspx 

 

The most important thing is to check the availability of the business name via USPTO and checking the domain name availability at Go Daddy.
