Hey SuN!

I was at the supermarket with my gf this past weekend and remarked at how fast food prices are rising and then saw this article today:

I can`t believe how fast the cost of food is rising!  I can`t remember a time when every couple of weeks some necessary item is more expensive.  I tend to buy the same foods over and over again but just in the past year (mostly past 6-8months) Ive noticed the following...

Jumbo eggs from 2.69 to 3.69 (+37%)
Gallon of Milk 5.19 to 6.29 (+21%)
Natural PB  3.05 to 3.65 (+20%)
20 slices Borden Single slice wrapped Amer Cheese 4.99 to 5.99 (+20%)
Cottage Cheese 2.69 to 3.89  (+44%)
Edys Ice Cream...  6.29 to 7.29 (16%)
Canned Tuna .89 to 1.49...  (+67%)  and i NEVER see 2 or 3 for $1 anymore..
Chipotle Burrito at lunch (+8%)

Weirdly enough Whole Foods 365 brand offers some of the best value out there but is a bit of a walk for me.  When I was there a couple months ago milk was like $3.69 which is a good deal for NYC...  I think I am going to have to start checking out store deals online and not just stop in anywhere anymore..

Anyone else feeling it?

Yes, everything is going up.  And I do think about it, as I struggle again to `Not` raise our prices through a second raise of price increases in USPS mail.  I figure our sales will just have to keep increasing, as they have been.  But in reality, I know our product is a luxury item, not a food item that you have to have in a struggling economy.

I am definatley feeling the pinch at the grocery store. I now look for the sales on checken breast and stock up and actually pay attention, when I am adding to the cart. Our bill for groceries has gone up I would say 20%.Gas...Forget it..3.30 a gallon... I thankfully do alot of local business and am in the heart of where everyone is.

I am always scanning the circulars to see which supermarket has the best sale. I have even made it to several stores for specific items - taking in mind that I drive in such a way that they are en route to my home or are close enough to each other so that I am not burning the gas. Long live good sales...........

Cookies that used to be 2 for $5 are now 2 for $7 - a great way to get me away from the Oreo and Chocolate Chip binge.

I`ve been battling it too.  This past week I took my husband shopping for the first time in months.  I had kept telling him that prices were going up, but it was pretty funny seeing him "realize" this on his own.

See, one of the nice things about being a writer imprisoned on a remote island off the coast of Corsica, is that all I ever get to eat is stale bread and water:

$0.14 per week.

Okay, so it`s not all that good, and there aren`t many ways to cook it, but what can ya do? I want to be writer, so it`s part of a writer`s angst...right?

Actually, though, about the only way to keep the cost of food reasonable is to know how to cook. If you can cook, and you have a bit or creativity, you can do some judicious shopping for "late-dated" items, bulk items you can divide up and freeze, and so forth. Given those two skills, it`s not all that hard to eat very well for about $50/week for two people.

Regarding scanning the ads for sales, your better bet is to go shopping mid-week, after the weekend sales (Tues or Wed). Set a "circuit" so that you can cover all the supermarkets in your area in one trip. Then physically look at the various items, to find in-store sales that aren`t promoted in advertising circulars.

For example, every couple of weeks chickens will reach their expiration date. The store managers will mark them down to around $2.50 for an entire chicken. You can buy a couple, cut them up yourself, freeze them, and fill your freezer for about ten bucks. But you won`t see those sales advertised anywhere. Same with all sorts of other items.

Shopping is a skill, and it can be developed. :-) So`s cooking. All`s ya need to do is like to eat and want to know how to make the stuff you like.
