How often should I distribute flyers to prospective customers? I distributed about 100 flyers about a year ago and got one response. The flyers were left in mailboxes. When is it okay to distribute again? I have since changed my business name, gotten more focused with my goals, and gained more experience in my area of expertise.
Also, I'm interested in direct-mail advertising. But how do I come up with my mailing list?

Your marketing strategy or flyer is off if you received only one response. I also would not have waited a year to follow up on the flyer distribution. You might also want to redo you flyer.
100 flyers for a whole year seems inadequate to me. Unlike direct marketing, the aim of flyer distributing is usually getting attention of the public. The more flyers you sent out (to a large group of audiences, not spamming to a same group of customers!), the wider your name spread out! Of course, it has to be decided by your business scale & marketing/advertising budget since printing can cost quite a lot. Direct mails are more reader-friendly since it usually provide more solid information, and are targeted to more specified customer group. Nowadays, email marketing got more popular because of its cost-saving & result-measurable characteristics. It's easy to edit and customize, and can be used by all sizes of businesses.

You will want to distribute a lot more fliers and with more frequency if you plan on having a better response on this run. As example the same few local restaurants leave me a flier at least once a week if not more. Make sure your flier is catchy and it really helps if you offer an amazing coupon or some other type of catch to get them in the door. If you are thinking about a direct mail campaign just go into your local USPS and ask about the detail of there direct mail services. If you do choose them they will be able to provide you with all the addresses you need. There are other companies that do the same thing as well. Do you have a picture you can post of your last flier so we can give you some more feedback?
If you want to use this strategy again, then you have to focus on your flayers and make them attractive. But, in these days email marketing is more powerful then it. You can go for this, it is more effective and cheap and its result is faster than flayer.
From my personal experience, I have received up to 25% response rate on flyers on really good, laser-targeted campaigns. As some other posters said 1% is way off. Either your flyer was unattractive or you didn't define correctly your target population.
Flyers can be the best thing since sliced bread or a total waste of your time/money if you don't plan correctly on how you are going to distribute your flyers or are just unlucky. Unfortunately if you don't have web presence established and want to attract local customers flyers are probably the cheapest, most efficient way to get customers to know and do business with you.
They are a double edged sword but if you are really sure about your market and stick to a plan, flyers can be very effective.
BTW 100 flyers is an amount you want to distribute in minutes, not in a year-long span.
More important I think than flyers, although it depends somewhat on the business, is establishing a physical presence. The site talks about elevator pitches and I'm hoping networking is covered under that topic area.
You need to identify your market. Make a list of anyone who can connect you to your market and begin a campaign to keep yourself on front of that market. This ought include cards that are holiday, specific recognition day, birthday cards etc. Included in this can be information that describes the benefits, from your clients point of view, of your business.
In short, fliers it seems are a great way to introduce yourself and to remind people, but the way to get business is interacting with them. Does that make sense?
