I *may* be in the market to have one or two websites developed. Given that I consider myself quite competent from a technical perspective, I could theoretically spend the time and do it myself. That is the decision I am trying to make -- do I want to do it myself?

A couple of things make me answer no:

1. I am not a good artist. I am not necessarily looking for crazy, flashy sites, but I do want the site to look professional and not drive people away on first impression.
2. While I am technical yes, putting it all together from the look of the site, to the content management, to the interaction with backend data would take me probably more time than it is worth.

Ahhh the word "worth"...that is where the sticking point is. So I have my basic requirements for a website -- primarily informational, needs blog integration, no shopping cart needed (at first, but maybe later), ad supported initially, forum included, etc. So the question becomes how much does it cost for someone to develop my site vs. what I think it is worth to develop such a site myself? That question is what I need answered.

So who out there can recommend either (1) a strategy to getting a quote to develop my website -- I would hope it is not out of the realm of reason to expect a "free" consultation from a web designer (2) a person(s) or company that you have used to develop your website that you believe included the proper process for developing the site from inception to completion?

Like I said, I am looking for the best, fairest, most honest estimate of the cost to develop my site by a professional web designer vs. the cost of me doing it myself. A basic cost/benefit analysis.

Thanks.

Joel,

If you`re looking for  free quote... just PM me the info about your proposed site.

What helps to get a fair quote is to really define what you want your site to do, your goals for the site, target market, and indentify potential competitors.

TRJoel,
Being technically inclined doesn`t mean that you can tackle a web site of that architecture, especially when you say you want a content management system or that you want a blog. Although, they can be easily integrated with a simple link.. I am asssuming you want a fully developed backend system that you can use to manage your own content..
Have you ever considered Joomla? Joomla gives you all the tools that you are looking for, along with a well developed web site (web 2.0). It has content management, Blog (forum) and many other features such as ad tracking, SEO tools, and much more...
If you want to keep your cost down, and your web site looking professional, I would suggest going with Joomla (custom made template to fit your needs)
Email me at: emonroy@nuevohost.com and let me know more about what your needs are and I can send you a free quote if you wish... or you can call me at (626) 698-0841 I am open till 3:00 am... So if you wake up with ideas or questions at midnight feel free to call me...

Hello Joel!  You can`t go wrong with Roland or Edgar.  I would like to throw one more fellow SuN member out there and that`s Brian White w/ Initech design.  He did my site and I LOVE it.  Feel free to check it out, I think it`s a clean, professional looking site.  To find him, click his link on the bottom of my home page.

Hi TRJoel,

That is true that you can find yourself in a situation where the question comes up: Should I do it my self or get it done by someone else?

I think it depends on the time you have (deadline) and your level of expertise in both design and development. If most of the time, if one is good in web development, I recommend that it outsource the design, the reason is simply because the design send a statement to your visitor about their expectation of the site. When a site has a good design, most visitors tend to stay a little longer on the site just to browse. Then if the site can perform all its functionalities on the backend without any bugs, then the visitors will use your site for its repsective purpose.

Now in terms of Cost/Benefit, most excellent designers charge a lot because they are aware of what I`ve just described. My recommendation is to look at your budget and make the determination on where you want to invest your money. If you can do the development yourself, then invest all your budget into an excellent web designer. If you are a good designer, then invest in an excellent web developer. If you lack both skills, then spilt your budget with 30% design and 70% developer, as developers tend to cost more.

And in all cases, you can contact me for any advice.

Good Luck,

We started out by using WebSite Pros to do a template site for us because it was dirt cheap.  We just wanted to see if our concept would work. I am a year into the e-commerce business and am in the process of a customer redesign.  I interviewed several designers and all gave me a free consultation and proposal.  I ended up choosing someone local for several reasons.

Hello.

Although this thread is old, it represents the situation of many whether or not they had programming / development skills or not.

Personally, I suggest that a few items be considered BEFORE asking for quotes. There is a brief laundry list of items to consider here at `Looking for web designer!`.
