Hello All,

I am having trouble deciding on what type of business to start. I have been out of work for about 3 months now and have had a difficult time finding a job. I would really like to pursue starting and opening a business to make money for myself. I do understand that I am good with my hands and would prefer to do something profitable that was a hands-on type of business. I need help and any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I used to own a bike shop (summer) and ski shop (winter). You can contact us here for more about that experience. As far as fixing bikes, it doesn't take a huge investment, but you will need training and tools.

One way is to work for an existing shop to learn and see if you like it. I would recommend this unless you are convinced this is what you want to do. It doesn't sound like you are.

As far as starting a business, it takes a certain type of person. The most important thing to know is what is your heart's desire. You can learn to do most anything. Some businesses are "easier" to start. Some more difficult.

Most of the time you will find what you're looking for as you diligently search. We write about this on our web site. You're welcome to do some searching there.

Our Best to You,

Scott & Laurie

In my opinion, there is nothing that compares to the income potential through internet marketing.  The overhead is VERY low compared to any traditional business, AND a proper internet marketing business can be scaled up at any time, with nearly no extra effort on your part.

Its worth looking into if you have never considered it.  Let me know if you need anything else.

When you plan to start a business, you need to be familiarize with all of its operation. Some of its procedures will all have to start from scratch. Know the people you will work with for the business that you will be running. Give them also the motivation drive for them to help you reach your goal.

Look at it from this perspective. What can you do that will impress people? In other words, what can you do to generate word of mouth? Also, you need to be passionate about your business. That's infectious.

Start doing something that you think will work and refine it. Remember, this is a process and you probably won't be right first time. Only you can find out what will work. Just don't be afraid to try things.

i would find a balance between 1) what you enjoy 2) what delivers value 3) what you can price competitively and satisfy your income requirements and 4) what do people want/need

a common problem of entrepreneurs (like me) is that we are interested in everything! and we want to do it all ourselves!  that is a discussion for another time, but for now start experimenting right now . . .

just do it, take action, some action is always better than no action . . .

Hi there,

Start with something you are passionate about. Like for me, I love photography so I started a photography website and started marketing it. Choose something you are passionate about so you won't get tired of it easily. Do blogging, if you like writing articles.

Hope this helps :)

Well first figure out what you would love to do and base your business around it.  If you are going to start up a business make sure that it's a passion of yours because if it is, you will do anything to make it work!  And to make your business work you have to put work into it! So find your passion and make it a reality! :)

When choosing a business, it is important that you select something that you truly love doing and can see yourself doing over and over again.  While it may be tempting to choose a business that gives you the big income, sometimes having the passion for your business may just be the thing needed to bring in the big bucks. Work won't feel like work when you have a passion for what you are doing.  There is nothing like doing what you love to encourage the creative juices to come out.
