In speaking with fellow Startupnationers I have come up with an idea that I would like to get feedback on.  Here it is:

I would be offering portable GPS systems loaded with points of interest to vacation destinations.  Example would be a gps system that has points of interest for nice restaraunts or landmarks.  I would also include a small pamphlet with the GPS that would list the points of interest and little pieces of information about them, also how to locate them using the GPS.  I would include 1,2,3 yrs of udates for an extended price.

Can please tell me the downfalls of going forward with this business?  I like to look at people`s point of view on the subject and then weigh the results.

I`ll start by listing a few:

1.travel-if I had to it would be expensive
2.Resort already has tourist info in a user-friendly package

Thanks for the input................

What would be your price range?  Membership basis or per trip fee?  Cost would be my biggest question.  Am I getting value for what I`m paying.  I think your program would be well embraced by travelers.  I would like this type of service b/c I would want to maximize my dollars and time when vacationing in a foreign place.

Good luck!

It`s a pretty good idea but I would be concerned about the long-term viability of a business based on this technology.  GPS is making its way into cell phones, laptops, cameras and other portable gadgets.  In the coming years, more and more people will already be carrying around GPS devices.  As this technology becomes more commoditized, there will be less of a demand for stand-alone GPS products.  It`s my understanding that the current leaders of these products (like Garmin) are worried as GPS becomes part of other products.

So I think to start a business in this realm will take a strong effort in strategy to stay ahead of the changing tide.  Maybe it`s not devices you sell or rent (or whatever you were planning) but your efforts are put into software for a wide array of products.  Just a thought.

I have to agree with CampSteve on this. Phones are where everything will end up ( cameras and gps ). Almost all will have internet connection in the future so maybe you could think of a way to design a website that does the same thing. They go to it on their phone, your site pulls their gps location currently or where they will be, and you display cool loctions on a google map interface. That would be interesting I think. Good luck!

How about starting out targeting the elderly crowd driving the 150 foot RV`s and get them to KOA locations and sightseeing destinations - maybe offer CD`s to walk them through the history of what your leading them to?

That`s done by many companies, on the Phone. For example, iFund just funded a company doing iPhone software for that.

Instead of using GPS, Apple gets the phone location based on cell towers and nearby Wifi access points. It is not as accurate, but it is within half block or so.

I agree that very soon it is going to be a standard to have GPS navigation on your phone.  That would be a really big obsticle but not an impossible one.  I could transition with the market and offer my information via the internet to be downloaded to the phone.  That way I`m not having to sell hard goods, just the rights to download the files.

This is going to take a lot more research than I anticipated.  Since I"m not a programmer I am going to have to contract one to set up the system, this means more overhead.
