My idea is to interview successful, passionate professionals around the country about their career path to transform their stories into resources that assist aspiring individuals determine the direction of their careers.  To get this idea of the ground, I plan to tap into the resources closet to me...my friends and family.

My problem is what can I give friends and family in return for their help.  I know that I can offer small businesses direct marketing and online advertising, but what about the people who just want to contribute?

I`d like this post to be a brainstorming session, and to effectively do this I think a little additional info is required.

The Specs:
  • Our immediate plan is to conduct a cross country tour featuring 200 interviews with some of the most passionate professionals on the planet.
  • The tour will span 14,000 miles in three months
  • Our "resources" will take the form of a book, along with our website www.pursuethepassion.com
  • Our needs that family and friends will be contributing to are things like places to stay, lunches and dinners on the road, fueling our fire by filling up the gas tank, publicity, and donations

So how can we give back?  Credits in the book?  Inclusion on our sponsorship page. Cleaning the toilets?

ANY ideas you have would be MUCH appreciated!

Brett,

Is PTP going to be a business (for profit) or are you planning this as a charitable endeavor?

Robert,

Right now we are not incorporated because we are utlizing this tour to determine the direction we want to take our idea.  On one hand, you have a non-profit that allows sponsors to write off their contributions, and this is great if we want to do future tours for other college students.

But on the other hand, if we are successful at producing for profit resources like career books, then it will end up taking the form of a for-profit business.

So the way that I am going about this idea is that this is a start-up, with family and friends contributing to the initial stage of funding.

If you are going to interview 200 people for a book, why not get 200 people up front that you will visit in each city to sponsor the trip. This way, you could have all the sponsors decal on your vehicle. Plus, I along the way, you could interview a few more people without the thought of owing anyone but the interview for the book. Incorporate the college, and the research will be for the business college at the University. This should be a non-profit if you are going to do this, but if you are going to sell the book for profit later, you can switch from non-profit to for-profit.

In the absence of a formal entity - any support (gifts or loans) will be to you personally. If loans - you will be responsible for them and if gifts - may create a tax obligation.
