I am looking at exporting a French non-alcoholic beverage from Canada to the US. The person who is interested in buying it from me is a small business person, too, and I doubt she has experience importing.

My sticking-point is that the couriers won`t give me a full quote, i.e. they say they can`t tell me what the taxes and duty will be. I have called various government agencies and customs brokers, hopefully I will get some replies, but not yet.

Anyone have experience with this? She has not committed to buy, so I feel I am doing a lot of work with potentially no gain. Not sure if I want to spend another day being on hold, etc, with no payoff.

I would call a customs broker or a freight forwarder. If they get the job, they will be happy to quote you.  They should be able to come within 10% I would assume and on the duty/tax they should come much closer.  I also think you have to be a bit of a tough piece of leather when you call. I am a tough girl, I was raised with a RR father who always had to deal with truckers, brokers ect, and I remember there wasn`t this nicey hi how are you, great  how are you. It was more, Joe, I have 10 pallets of this and I need to put it there, what will it set me back for Uncle Sam?
Keep at it. We import to Canada, through FEDEX. They handle it all, and we tell our customers, you get to pay the import, not us.  SO unless you are quoting her with that in mind...
don`t worry.

My other question would be if you have checked the cost from France to the US vs, France to Canada to the US? Does it go free from France to Canada?  That would be sweet.

Are you interested in German Imports?
Just checking!!
Good Luck
