Hi All,

I am looking for information on how to create email branding materials. (ie custom email signatures, email letterheads, etc.) Although I have been doing research on this topic, if you have any advice on the best websites and/or books that are great for proper/cutting edge email branding, that would be great!

Thanks & God Bless,

Tyra

Couple of questions:
  1. Are you using a CMS or blogging platform currently?
  2. Are you willing to pay for a service?
  3. Do you just want to send the email or do you want to track links/usage, etc?

Campaign Monitor`s resources page has all kinds of information about email marketing. In addition to branding & design there are tons of technical issues you need to be aware of, CM gives a good overview of pretty much everything.

Thanks KatyB & RabbitMountain.

KatyB, I currently use iContact and have designed my email signature in Adobe Illustrator. Although I am not a graphic designer, I have a creative eye and know I could learn how to more easily create other signatures and email letterhead, etc if I had a good book and/or website.
Honestly for now, I just want to send the email. However, I would like to know what it takes to be able to track links/usage, etc.
While I have someone that is experienced in website design working on my template, I look forward to doing these email branding items myself.

I founded an email stationery business called inboxFX and we design custom email stationery for individuals and business.  We can include links back to your web site and it will work from any email program, web-based email service or handheld device as we brand your email on-the-fly.  Check it out at www.inboxfx.com.

Hi Mike,

You offer some of the solutions that I want to actually provide. Because of my eye for unique graphic solutions, I know I will be able to provide these services to my clients (marketing consulting) myself until I decide to outsource it.
If you have any suggestions as to the best resources (books, websites, courses, etc) for learning this skill set, it would be greatly appreciated. I am not attempting to actually become a full time graphic designer, but rather become efficient in creating creative branding solutions and understanding the intricacies of them.

Thanks & God Bless,

Tyra

Dear Tyra:

The two tools that we use for email stationery design are Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.  Most of our designs are inspired by existing web sites so there is not much true graphic design required.  We do a lot of manipulation of screen captures and focus on layout more than design.

As for creating branding solutions, this is more complex than people might think as there are so many facets. I know of Realtors that pay $ 7500.00 for a complete branding from the new headshot, a new logo, colors and fonts and a stationery package.

You can see a few examples of my branding projects in a blog post I wrote at http://themarketingguy.wordpress.com/2008/06/25/recent-business-card-designs/

Keep in mind that a Brand is intangible. It is the meaning or feelings you associate with a service, company or product. If ten people are asked to describe your business or product, you may get different descriptions, however, it is the similarities that are the brand.

A Brand is not a logo. A logo only identifies the brand; it is an entry point.

A Brand is not a product. Many people talk about managing their brand, but they really are managing their product. The brand is often the reason we buy the product.

Thanks Mike. I agree that a brand is more than most of us realize or understand. I am currently learning/using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. While I have a pretty good eye for design, I look forward to learning more of the "how to" details of correctly creating email stationery. For example, how to use a custom email signature without it appearing as an image attachment? How to properly setup the email letterhead? How to be certain that the email is not too large in size and does not land in the SPAM box? Obviously you have figured out the answers to these questions. I am positioning myself to get these answers and find the appropiate resources so I can learn how to offer the best/most effective solutions for my clients!
Congrats on your creative service offerings. It`s nice to see someone provide creative solutions!
