The most important thing we can do to increase the likelihood that our businesses are successful is educate ourselves. Being the chief in a small businesses or start-up is particularly challenging because you must not only be an expert in your industry, you must also know about management, marketing, sales, accounting, negotiations, leadership, production, design, communications, etc.

It is therefore critically important to get educated on these topics. Some venture to business school to get an MBA; that is the path that I followed (shameless plug: MBA from Babson, #1 in Entrepreneurship like 14 years in a row). But an MBA is not the only option, not always a great option, and may not even be the best option. But fear not! There is an alternative.

Over at Personal MBA (http://www.personalmba.com), Josh has pulled together a reading list, manifesto, blog, and discussion forums to help provide an MBA-like education from some great books in business. Despite the fact that I have an MBA, I have still read over half of his list so far. You can`t get enough education. I recommend that you check it out. And, no, I have no affiliation with Josh or the site. Just passing along a good find.

Tack,

I agree.  If you live your life depending totally on the wind, then you`ll miss the opportunities that might come your way if you know how to jibe.

I`ve always believed that everyone should have a diverse "Life Toolbox".  This toolbox should be filled with a wide range of skills, education, and experiences.  It is the depth of the toolbox that allows people respond well to change and to minimize risk.

Thanks for the link to the MBA site.  I`ll check it out.  After the dismal education I received at the Univ of Phoenix, I`m always looking for another university who knows how to educate.

Being relatively new to the whole entrepreneurship scene, I have to say that I am a knowledge HOUND. I`ve been inquisitive since I was a kid and now that I`m 25, out of college and ready to make some real meaning in my life, every ounce of knowledge and information is paramount to me getting off on the right foot. You guys don`t even want to know how many blogs I subscribe to! haha

Doug,

Personalmba.com is probably the 2nd most valuable piece of info that I`ve found since I decided to take the entrepreneurial plunge;  Startup nation.com was the 1st.

Thanks again.  It is truly remarkable the amount invaluable information I`ve found here.

Hey Doug, thanks for the link. I like to think that if repetion is the mother of skill, then learning is the practice that makes improvement (not perfect).

Thank you, Tack! I went over there and checked it out, pulled off a couple things to read and have my first book on order.  It was very informative, I am looking forward to my e-newsletter.
