This year more people will be buying online than ever before, if you have an online store / ecommerce web site here are a couple of (actually three) quick tips to help get your share of the online market: Ecommerce tips for holiday sales

  1. Use your ecommerce functions to there fullest. Most good ecommerce programs email the purchaser with a confirmation of their order. Use this feature to communicate additional sales or promotions. If you have a current sale going on, add a brief note to the confirmation message – or better yet a link to the sale on your web site.Brief and simple is the goal… after all the main purpose of the email is to communicate order information to the customer.
  2. Short and simple email marketing – Use the emailing feature of your ecommerce program to announce/promote your holiday marketing…. but make it short and to the point. Everyone is busy during the holidays, so keep your mail short and simple…. maybe only point out one or two items?
  3. Free delivery – potential buyer love free delivery. So, figure out what your selling price needs to be offer free shipping.

The Holidays are an important time to some online retailers.  Me included.  What I done is to start a blog that people can subscribe to and a facebook presence.  It allows customers who like me to receive voluntary messages.  My number 2 policy when I started my business was to NEVER subject my customers to unsolicited contact based on their interaction with me. However, the blog and facebook do allow for interaction.

What I do for the holidays is I post banners giving customers specific Time In Transit information for the various shipping methods I use and suggested latest dates for getting their gift.  For example this year Christmas is on a Saturday.  I let people know that the last date to order something to get it in time for Next Day is on December 23rd, the last day for 2nd Day is Dec 21st etc..

Also during the holidays it is especially important to answer email very quickly and to keep inventory indicators as accurate as possible.

What the original poster said about including other info in the confirmation letter helps a lot as well.

Having a live chat for the customers is also ideal :) I'm fond of websites with live online chat for assistance something like for 24/7 purpose.

Base on exerience, Online Chat does not work especially in a niche market. Might want to strategized before going forward with implementing online chat on your ecommerce store.
