I hope everyone knows that if you use GoDaddy`s Privacy Option than you DO NOT own the domain name, Domains By Proxy does. DBP is owned by GoDaddy.

However with Dynadot you retain ownership even with the privacy option.

Also, all somebody has to do to get your hidden information is to merely challenge ANYTHING about your domain name. No court order is required. It`s like this with every Privacy Option company I have found.

So your WhoIs entry will not show who you are, but anybody can challenge your registrar and get the information anyways.

If you use the privacy option than all communications to your domain name (not to your website) are "screened" by the company ie GoDaddy or Dynadot. They answer phone calls, read your e-mail and read your snail-mail. Then THEY decide what they will forward to you, normally by e-mail unless you have made other arrangements. So although this will save you tons of junk, how private is it?

It`s all in the fine print.

As I said before, I don`t understand why people do the privacy option anyway.

If this is your business site, what are you trying to hide?

I agree with you Nikole, but does the privacy option really cut down on junk, or is the junk you receive already at an acceptably low level?

Why does using the privacy option mean you don`t own it?

Because GoDaddy (Domains By Proxy) and others registers the domain  under THEIR name, address, e-mail and phone number, so they are the registered owner according to ICANN - Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers.

GoDaddy lists you as the registered user of that domain.

Rip,

Wow, I never knew this! I just called ICANN and when I asked the very uneducated girl on the phone about this, she said it is "sometimes true", advised me to go to internic.net to find a registrar but to be sure to read the fine print. This is disturbing to me.......

I receive an enourmous amount of junk. It doesn`t come from the dns though ... it comes from having a pubiic website, signing up for anything, using it, etc.

Gmail spam filters take care if it.

It is just to be revealed from unwanted junk mails and phone calls...it enhances the privacy of the domain owner. So,when public views the particular domain name in WhoisXY.com they will not be able to find the real owner, but that doesn't mean that we are not the real owners....because it will be displayed that the particular site is whois protected thereby revealing that somone else is the real owner...
