Hi friends,

I an employer and I just want to verify an employee`s birth information. I’m looking for actual birth certificates of each and every employee. So is there anybody who can help me? Any idea will be highly appreciated!

Have you asked/required each employee to bring in their birth certificate?

There are services on the Net that will verify that info for you. Type in "birth certificate verification" and see what results you get.

I thought that to hire someone you have to have them give you 2 items of identification proving their age, and citizenship. So a driver`s license or birth certificate would be part of the new-hire process.....wouldn`t it?

This sounds illegal and highly suspicious to me.

What is the purpose of such an activity?

I have worked with Mexican illegals here in North Carolina who were working with us at our inn that I managed. One of them showed me a illegal ID card that looked real to me. It was another person`s name on the card but he had established himself with that card that had his photo on it.

So you do background checks if you want to do background checks ... but pulling the actual birth certificate of each employee is very fishy. Plus, because of anti-immigration and homeland security laws ... you can`t do in many states.

So if you want a background check, do a background check and be complete about it. It is not uncommon now to check an employees work, credit and residence history for the purposes of employment.

You`re right - a Form I-9 is required.  If there is any doubt, ask for their passport.

Hi all,

The law also protects employers under the "Good Faith Effort" to verify a person’s identity. In short, an employer just has to ask and see documents requested on the I-9. Employers don’t necessarily have to prove the documents are real or fake. Unless, the document is an obvious fake. So why go to the extra effort to actually verify a birth document?
