I am starting up a retail business that I want part of it to work as a non profit.  Someone that I know is under an umbrella to another non profit.  Does anyone know how to do that?  Where would you find the organization?  Is it cleaner to be your own non profit?  Any ideas will be helpful.

HI, BridalChic,

I would have to say sometimes it`s easier to be your own nonprofit, a lot of work, but easier because you hold the reigns.

It really depends on what your goal is and where you want to go with this.  I don`t know if I can offer too much without some detail.

Also, be careful.  A 501 (c) 3 has very strict requirements and limitations while 501(c)6s can`t provide a write off value to donors.

If you feel more comfortable talking off board, please contact me.  I will help as much as I can.

Erin,

You are the best!  Love your site and very informative.  I will look into your suggestions.  Do you have any good resources for micro loans?

Thanks,

Besides prayer, check with your local SBA office, and SCORE, which will probably be at the University, and no I do not know which one of the 300 in Boston that would be.

Bank of America is doing most of the SBA lending that I know of.
