Thinking time is essential.  I've always believed in scheduled thinking and reflecting time. Without it, you cannot be focused.

Thanks for the post!

planning is the first step while starting a new business, we have to put lot of effort in planning, and without proper resources it is the planning management which decides the fate of our successful business.

Taking time out like that is a great idea. I don't specifically take time away just to sit and think about business but on breaks and trips away I do use it as an opportunity sometimes to take a step back and consider the bigger picture.

Your planning needs as much time as your other work. Your all businesses depend on your good and effective planning. If your planning is not up to the worth then all other your strategies and tactics are useless.

You need to plan, of course, but only in a team. Everyone needs to make his own thoughts about a specific topic before, and then each opinion needs to be discussed in a general strategic meeting. Often, you find a solution only with a team because you're talking and that leads to be more innovative than sitting in a room along creating a strategy.

A strategy usually needs to be divided in 3 time horizons, <1 year, 1-3 years and >3 years.

A strategy needs to cover all fields your business is active and all actions your business is going to operate in.

Planning is very important, but I feel execution is more important. Many small businesses waste time trying to find the perfect solution/direction/messaging. Get out there and try your plan then analyze and tweak.

I think Planning is one of the most important part for any good start. If you do anything with a good plan than the chances of failure become very less.

Thoreau had it right when he left for Walden Pond! (Thoreau Quotes for your personal enjoyment!)

"Thinking" should be done:

  • For a long time before a business is running
  • Every day while it's running. I like sticky notes all over, and then at the end of the week I gather the all up and put them in a notebook, then make a more outlined typed up plan.
  • I think having a more scheduled thinking get-away is a great idea. Set everything else aside and just plan, reflect, analyze, and don't forget to congratulate yourself on all of your efforts!
  • Group strategy meetings are a must, get all employees involved.

One of the keys to maximize productivity (and therefore increase chances for success) is to stop, take a break and rest. And so it's a yes to occasional "down times" if it helps you re-charge, meditate and reflect.
