Well over the weekend I took some time to evaluate my life and how it’s going. I quickly realized that I’m running through life and that made me wonder, am I going to fast? Should I pace myself? Last year just about everything about me changed, I got married, we had a baby, we moved, I switched jobs, bought a new car, I even got a new cell phone. Last year was a big year for me and my wife, we’re totally different people now, not in a bad way, but just different, and it takes some getting used to. So this year we decided to take it slow, then my wife turned around and signed a lease for our salon, so this year we’re moving salons, I don’t think that’s taking it slow because this is a HUGE step. Now, when I look back, I clearly see myself running through life, I’m enjoying it, but I’m running. I certainly feel like I’ve accomplished a lot and I’m excited for each day to come. I only hope that running doesn’t come back to haunt me. One thing that’s been very positive about this pace is that I get a LOT accomplished because I’m used to it now. I’d also like to say this is not about skipping steps or not evaluating things, this is about accomplishments throughout the year.

So do other members run through life? Are you a runner, a walker or a crawler? What are the positives and negatives of each? Not that any of these are bad, it’s a personal choice. As I evaluated my own life I noticed there were years when I crawled, years when I walked and now years that I run. I can only hope next year will be a year I can crawl, with a martini in my hand.

Hey Todd,

I certainly understand what you mean. Some days I feel like I am running. I have to screech the brake pedals just to check my blind spots.  Some days, I`d rather walk because it does get a little overwhelming.

My kids were only 7 and 9 when I took the plunge to leave the corporate world and take the entrepreneurial world on my own.  I completely pulled the safety net underneath me and just went for it.

I think it`s great that you have your wife. It makes it a team effort in the big race of life.  My advice is every now and then stop and breathe life as it comes. The pace maybe fast but as long as you know where you are heading, a good sound plan to guide you, and a good wife to travel with you-I think you will find that you can juggle a lot more than you think.

Challenge is what most of us entrepreneurs are fueled with. Money is great but its the feeling of accomplishment that weighs the greatest in our personal legacies.
Wouldn`t you agree?

LT

There`s another great old platitude that`s been around for a very long time. "It isn`t the destination that matters; enjoy the journey."

After all, we know the destination in life, right? We`ll be dead. 80-90 years seems like an awfully long time when we`re 14. But it`s really not so long in the scheme of things. Plus, you really can`t do all that much from birth to 18, and from 70-90. So knock about forty years off that, and you`ve got about 40-50 years of really getting out there and doing stuff.

If you`re always planning for tomorrow, then what will you remember about today?

I`ve definately done all 3 (ran/walked/crawled) at different times in my life. When I was single, working and trying to go to school - I was running. Then I `walked` for a bit (just about a year) after getting married, while still working full-time. After my son was born 8 weeks early, I `crawled`, taking time out to care for him in the NICU, and watching in amazement as he would reach each milestone.

When my daughter came along, the pace of my life quickened, and so I was again walking (more like a slow jog). Now, as both of my kids are heading off to school this year, and I am due to receive my first production run in September - I suddenly feel as if I`m sprinting and hurdeling!

So to answer your question, I think I spend most of my life at a faster pace, but it really makes me appreciate and look forward to those times when I am able to stop and smell the roses. Sometimes I have to force myself to crawl, but I know that if I don`t these precious years with my kids and family will be a blur.

I tend to stroll through life.  In the past - about 17 years ago - I found myself running through life and, at the age of 35, my doctor told me I was "a heart attack waiting to happen."  That`s a major wake-up call.  I altered my life from "living to work" to "working to live" at that point.  Having a well-balanced life became MUCH more important than working ALL the time.

I dunno....I spoke with my mother about this, and she told me that I was born a couple of days late, slept through most of it, then didn`t walk until I was about 2. I`d figured out a way to get people to carry me instead. I suppose I got too heavy at some point, or they wouldn`t carry me exactly where I wanted, so I <sigh> had to start walking....or something. Mostly I just rolled.

Most of the time I am `running`. Then I `walk` upstairs and `crawl` into bed!

Seriously I think we all have the choice to either crawl, walk or run. It`s about balancing all three so you feel you are coping.

Yesterday as an example (for me):

Running:

start of day 05.30am: emails, wrote some articles and loaded articles onto my website, interviewed a `major` UK entrepreneur, mentored some clients

stopped work: 17.30

Jogging:

18.00

my wife and I have a flat by the sea which we rent out. Showed a client; agreed a 12 month rental

Walking:

18.30

Wife and I walked along the sunny seafront; had a bit to eat in a local restaurant

Walking:

20.00

catch up on emails; sent tenancy agreement to new flat tenant

crawl:

21.00

play `brain training` game on DS lite for an hour - went to bed

Running:

up again at 05.30am this morning.

So for me a it`s a balance. Some days are more `run` some are more `walk` and `crawl`.

I choose. I love my life.

Andrew
