Maybe you`ve heard the Missouri state slogan that they`re the "show me" state? Or perhaps you`re familiar with the expression, "I only know whut I sees?"

Our senses are notorious for being the least reliable way to gain knowledge and understanding. Yet so many people believe that if something feels right, it`s indeed right and correct and true in an objective way.

I looked at the first illusion on this page and just couldn`t believe it. So, despite further proofs and evidence, I copied the image into Paint Shop Pro, created an area of gray matching the one checker square, then moved it to the other.

I`ll be flummoxed if it isn`t exactly the same color! Yikes!!

At the bottom of the page are links to a whole world of other fascinating illusions, for your entertainment. But keep in mind that if you use your eyes to validate reality, either for yourself or for other people, you`re running a risk. Maybe something to consider when it comes to Web page design, colors, and layout?

I love optical illusions. The checkerboard one was definitely cool. I`ve seen these before, and each time, it never ceases to amaze me - I know exactly what I`m looking at and I fall for it all over again :)

Darn it Craig!  Not only did I have to look up "flummoxed" but now I have to grind into my long list of ways I`m optically biased and objectively complacent ... THANK YOU! (you`re always so great about giving the brain a shot of creative "thunk").

LOL! Hey...I USED to be able to do brain thunks....until my own fell out, looking at some of these illusions! :-) I went and looked up "the hollow face" illusion, and found a YouTube video where someone is showing how it works. Good grief! I don`t believe nuthin` no more....

A new idea as to why we have perceptual illusions from the NYT.

KevDev, that`s a fascinating article! So...we`re actually seeing into the future, eh? How cool is THAT! :-D

Actually, though, it does begin to integrate these illusions with the construction of trending analysis, probability calculations, guesswork, and anticpation of movement. It`d be pretty sad if human beings could only react to the immediate present....we`d probably all be dead by now.

humm ... I`m thinking is this is adaptive evolution from hunting; you`re not seeing into the future but rather your hunter brain is extrapolating the point of contact based upon the present location, speed, and motion ... kind of like blinking before someone pokes you in the eye with a sharp stick.
