I think its a compromise solution for an online business. The user doesnt want to convert your website for mobile view, he wants you to convert it for him. I also not agree with predefined theme or plug-ins because this methods cant display my branding elements or ads. :)

Whether a mobile site is necessary really depends on the type of industry.

Many websites need to be accessible to people when they are on the move as well as when they are in front of a computer. But many smart phones today can go to full pages without any problems.

I have a friend who has built a daily deal website, EF Buys. It is doing Deals for Small Business. He said he did not need any mobile accessible sites. Because deals for small business are not something needs to be done quickly while people are on the move.

But groupon, on the other hand, is a daily deal site for consumers. They do need mobile sites. I also recently heard that they were going to launch a push-button at every cash register in super markets.

I agree with you 100% that if you plan to stay ahead of your competition you must have a mobile phone version of your web site. :)

Mobile search is gaining ground quickly due to the high usage of smartphones. In my own backend web statistics tool I see over 10 percent of my visitors coming to the site through a mobile device.

Great article. With the rise in mobile marketing, businesses are rushing to "go mobile." The mobile apps/mobile website industry is also seeing rapid growth. Another company in this space is Womple, which makes "going mobile" super easy and affordable. Check it out: http://www.womple.com

Not only do they have a separate index for mobile content, but also it is fairly empty. The other day I performed a search for an Imax theater in Santa Barbara, and it told me that the best option was a theater in San Diego. Really? I jumped on Imax.com and found a theater located just 19 miles away.

I never thought I would miss directory style websites, but in this particular example, a mobile directory for all theaters in the US would have been able to give Google Mobile the correct solution to serve up.

Dexter is right, automatic conversions, templates, and secondary sites from a monthly paid CMS are half-solutions that band-aid the problem but have tons of down-sides. In addition to the link he mentions, another place is Floggem, they make mobile friendly websites custom using the website you already have. No automatic scripts and no second sites to keep your content updated in.
