AHHHHHHH!!!!

People it is not what it can do for you that will bring value. It helps your position because there is a relevant link on another site to your site.

If no one comes to the site who cares?  The search engines catch the links and you win without regard to what Craig`s List is or is not. It is just good SEO. Do the freebie links when you can; not for money but for SEO.

Tony brings up one of my favortie pet peeves....Can we define a "Hit"?

A hit is when you go to a website and your computer loads the site. Each image on the site represents one "hit." so if there are 40 images on the home page, that is 40 hits.

We want to measure in visits or unique visitors, not "hits." It is a totally BS number so far as a web site owner is concerned.

I know a fellow who had a small nursery. He promoted his plant sales on Craig`s List and the ads brought him quite a few customers. Unfortunately, he didn`t do well enough to stay in business. He closed the nursery this past summer.

Yes, always difficult to explain the difference to the excited client.  The "hit" number always gets them charged up - until I explain the details to them.  I get an average of 125,000-130,000 "hits" a month on my site and I`m still pleased when that is translated to the approximately 5000 unique visitors in that same time period.

I`ve used craigslist quite a bit to promote my real estate listings.  I`ve found that its a good tool in my market area (DC/Northern VA) for properties less than $300K for the most part.  I had a condo listing on craigslist in the beginning of the year.  I received many calls about the condo, and although it didn`t sell as a result of being on craigslist, I ened up picking up 2 new clients as a result.  It definitely can work for real estate.

I`m in the Chicago area, which now, like San Francisco, NYC and other large cities, is breaking out into local areas. So we have North side, West burbs, City, and so forth.

With Craig`s list you can only post once for 7 days. Although they have a search engine, it`s not particularly great in terms of posting an ad and being found by anyone in the entire metro-suburban area.

I get the point that it`s supposed to be a local board for people close by to do the actual buying, but I think that`s too restrictive. I also get the point about using the link for helping a web site.

I`m not all that excited about it anymore, for services, and this is only based on my own experience. But we`ve found some fabulous buys where it comes to furniture or other for-sale items.

CraigL:

I agree. It has changed and is somewhat more restrictive and limiting - even limiting its own success as a classified forum.

Thanks,
