Do you consider obesity a disability? Do employers have the right to refuse to hire you for being obese? Your opinion....

Obesity is a disability, a handicap, because it leaves you worse off for suffering it. It's certainly not a bonus to be striven for. It limits what you can do. Obese people can't do all the jobs healthy people can do, and businesses should be allowed to recognize that. I'm all for promoting the hiring of the disabled, but only when the disability isn't wholly incompatible with the functions of the job. Obese secretary? Fair game. Obese auto mechanic? If you can fit in the tight spots, and you've got the energy, great. Obese fitness trainer? Sorry, but equal opportunity has its limits.

Touchy! Obesity is a disability. However, I know people who are just plain lazy and this is why they are as big as they are. Unfortunately, there are legitimate reasons for obesity. Therefore, everyone who is disabled due to obesity is lumped together regardless of the reason.  Is it fair? no. Are there people out there who are obese for the sole purpose of gaining this "benefit"? You bet.  But how do you get around it? By rewarding those who are not obese. For example, give employees who are in good shape and go to the gym regularly, a break on their health insurance premiums...

Great points here.  Especially when it comes to matching the right person with the right job.  I can certainly understand the employers point of view.   If you hire someone who is obese chances are that it might cause the company in long run with employees calling in due to health reasons.   Also, it might actually cost the company more with health insurance.   Just my personal opinion....

I think there are too many idiots who equate obesity with lack of exercise or laziness.  A perfect example is a doctor I went to because I was gaining and retaining weight.  Her immediate response without asking a single question, “Obviously you eat to much and don’t exercise.”  I then advised here that I worked out an hour and a half a day, six days a week.  I also gave her a list of foods I ate during a typical day.  She suddenly had no explanation for why I was over weight.

A friend of mine was in the same boat.  He had been heavy set all his life.  And, as expected, people assumed it was because he was lazy.  Their opinion quickly changed though when they saw him working at a nearby ranch.  He would pick up two 140-pound bails of hay, one under each arm.  He would then carry them half a football field distance to the corral.  He also did other work around the ranch that physically exhausted his skinny friends.

So is obesity a handicap.  No!!!  But, stupidity is.

Good point.  Do you think some people are just programmed to be big  while others are programmed to not gain a pound?

actually obesity is not a disability.

it is just a body symptom.

fat people can do everything what normal person can do.

but only if the obesity is not due to any desease or has caused any desease.

Obesity is not disability, it is just liability.

Obesity is not an easy affliction to deal with.  Not only are some obese people battling a slow metobolism, but often depression becomes a daily struggle also.  I found that even after I lost the extra 60+ pounds I was carrying the depression still got the better of me until I started working on sculpting my body again.  A lot of running, swimming and weight-lifting helped for the core muscle-tone, but I found that a body wrap was the only way to get my skin firm again.  It's been a long road and I hope I've given you a different perspective on obesity.

For me not really as long as he/she is trying to do what the normal person usually do then I don't consider that as a disability.
