I personally don't see a difference. I've seen many high ranking sites with the .net suffix.

.com and .net are both tld (top level domains)
The extension does not matter .. Google uses over 200 factors and the most important in the content. The content must be high quality and by that I mean it must rate a certain grade level, grammar must be proper, PSAD and SEQ must be proper...

I think that .org and .edu carry more weight for rankings, as they`re often considered authority sites .... the .com, .net and others. :)

I think search engines does not care about the URL extentions. They give ranking according to the congruent, quality back links and popularity.
