Ken you are providing a great service.  Most accountants just push paper and fill out forms.  I try to teach my Accountants, Chartered Accountants and CPAs to break the cycle.  Many it would seem want to just get a copy of the clients software and fill out forms.  The client starts the problem and the preparer just carries it forward.

Entrepreneurs/businessman should focus more on business mission and let bookkeepers record transactions, accountants to do the financial side and tax experts do tax planning.

But i agree business owners should have a better understanding on money matters so that they can evaluate if reports presented are true or misleading.

Of course you want bookkeepers to record the transactions, but it is CRITICAL for business owners to understand the financial position of the company and to understand how operational decisions impact the financial well being of the company.

We as financial professionals should work dilligently to educate our clients, not tell the "don`t worry about those details ...". This is attitude does a great disservices to our customers and provides a negative light on people in our profession.

My goal is to work myself out of a job as much as possible, that means happy customers, great referalls  & mores $$$`s in my pocket.

I have found that understanding the finances can be a major roadblock for entrepreneurs (new and existing!).  As a bookkeeper, I focus on not only the data entry and day-to-day accounting (A/R, A/P, invoicing, etc.) but I also try to make sure that my clients understand their accounting reports and what they mean to help them better manage the financial health of their company.  Not paying enough attention to the bottom line is a sure route to failure.

That's great that you have that passion for your clients to understand the numbers. It's tough in a startup business to understand the importance of accounting. Keep it up OfficeGoddess!

I Never Understood the Importance of Accounting
