I am a stay at home mom. I recently had a great idea for an app. I contacted an app developer and was told that it would cost 24K to develop it. I would have to borrow the money. I was wondering if I should start a business to protect my personal assets.

If I do start up a business, what would be the best way to go about it.

Thanks

Why not start up a business where you can get help step by step from someone who is already successful. It's the only way I could of started. I'm learning so much and am having fun doing as well.

I would probably start with consulting a lawyer first. Prior to hiring someone to "create" the app for you there are a few things you need to consider such as copyright and getting a patent for your project so the so called programmer will not steal or resell your work. The rest should be straight forward as you need to market your app.

Hope this help

what about approaching a developer about being a partner with you in the business.  You would be the business end and he/she would be the tech person.

For me it sound's a bad idea. If you want to be successful in app market then you must learn programing. you should know the app market. Tell me one thing what if your plan failed? Your 24k is gone. A wise way to do that is learn at list basic programing and outsource it in small part so that it will be relatively cheap and your code is also secure (No one developer will have full code)

I agree with the above two replies. 24k sounds like a lot of money for what you're trying to accomplish and it would definitely be wise to shop that figure around. I don't know how in-depth your app construction would be, but it's hard to imagine that it could cost that much.

Additionally, a partnership with someone who could do the development while you maintain the idea and run the business could be a safer route to go. That being said, partnerships are tricky - make sure you are clear with the dividing lines of that partnership and get a lawyer to make sure whatever agreement you reach is fairly easy to get out of if the partnership goes sour. You want to be able to maintain the intellectual property rights for your idea, even if the interface goes with your ex partner.
