Did you know?

  • The first item available for sale in a vending machine in the United States was chewing gum.  The dispensing machines started appearing in train stations in New York City in 1888.

Now it is your turn to add a fun fact of random information....hope you are up for the challenge!

I have two:

The first product to have a bar code was Wrigleys gum.

The "Main Library" at Indiana University sinks over an inch every year because when it was built, engineers failed to take into account the weight of all the books that would occupy the building.

Did you know that Rosie O`donell`s Anti-American spew is heard by Millions of "unaware and unsophisticated" Americans every morning/day/night. And the signals from her show have reached other civilized planets that now believe there is absolutely No Intelligent Life on Earth.

Sorry guys. I had to get it out!

Did you know:

This chromolithograph by John Bufford after William L. Champey, ca. 1856, of the Boston Massacre prominently features a black man believed to be Crispus Attucks.

Crispus Attucks (circa 1723 - March 5, 1770), was the first of five people killed in the Boston Massacre. He has been frequently named as the first martyr for the cause of American Independence and was the only person of the five killed in the event whose name is commonly remembered.

Described as mulatto in contemporary accounts, Attucks was of African and Native American ancestry.

In the early 1800s, as the Abolitionist movement gained momentum in Boston, Attucks was lauded as an example of an African American who played a heroic role in the history of the United States. In 1858, Boston-area Abolitionists established " " In 1888, a monument honoring him was erected on Boston Common.

Since slavery and racial discrimination were conditions of life in the 1700s, few accounts of Black American heroes from that era survive to the present.

Thomas Crapper, a British plumber, developed a type of flushing toilet in 1872. He perfected the cistern - the tank that holds the water for flushing and made flushing quieter.

The American soldiers stationed in England during World War I referred to using the "crapper," when going to the bathroom. From there, the word "crap" came to represent toro poopoo and other terms for fertilizer-type of language.

(Actually, this reminds me of another little known ethnic slur kind of joke. The Polish first invented the toilet seat, long ago. But it was the Italians who perfected it, later putting a hole in the center.) :-D Hey....it could`a been a blond joke!

ElidS used images in posts pretty far back in history. I asked how he was able to accomplish it, and it`s a copy-paste thing. Unfortunately, I`ve never been able to get it to work.

Today is April Fool’s Day, which started in France in 1564. That was when New Year’s Day was switched from April 1st to January 1st. But the older folks, who were set in their ways, still celebrated New Year’s in April and were considered April Fools.

They were made fun of and had practical jokes played on them. These days in France, April 1st is called “Poisson d’Avril” which means April Fish. Young kids go around taping cut-out paper fish to their friend’s backs. But author Mark Twain got it right when he said, “The first of April is the day we remember what we are the other 364 days of the year.”
