For simple HTML I`d suggest checking out CODA from Panic.com. It`s a very
powerful interface as well as integrated with one of their best known Mac
products, Transmit.

Joel:

For beginner to intermediate level website building, look at RapidWeaver at
http://www.realmacsoftware.com The software and it`s incredible support
forums and developers have tons of really nice website templates. It`s a big
step up from .Mac/iWeb, beats CODA for ease of use and I wouldn`t even
think of Dreamweaver unless you`ve got lots of time (multiple months) to
learn all the coding that`s necessary.

I`m rebuilding my site right now using RapidWeaver - and it`s coming along
great!

Take care, Bill

I second RapidWeaver as a simple WYSIWIG site builder.

If you want more control, then use Coda. Simpler to use and cheaper than
Dreamweaver.

Hi,

Just wanted to get some tips for developing a website on the Mac.

1. iWeb (I have iWeb that came with iLife `06) seems interesting enough. But
is there a place where some more professional looking templates can be
downloaded or bought?

2. What are the good alternatives to iWeb, that have good professional
templates? Is RapidWeaver the choice here?

Thanks.

templatemonster.com

They have just about every single type of template known to man.  They can also tweak any template you order to your needs (for a fee) and they can build a custom site for you too.

As a note about buying templates.

I get a lot of emails from people who bought templates and thought they could edit them on their own, but are stuck in the middle.

Be careful when choosing a template.

Grab one that is all flash and you maybe in way over your head.

I say this a million times, but unless you really understand web design, I would not recommend doing it on your own.

It is possible.  But the results are usually exactly what you would expect from someone attempting a profession they are unfamiliar with for the first time.  Have you ever tried to fixing your car without a mechanic?

The portfolio should say it all.

Excellent point.  templatemonster.com has fully functional samples of every type of product they sell so you can get a feel for what you are about to purchase.
