I am looking at some companies to design a community website for me. Can anyone tell me a good website company and can you tell me if Heritage Web Solutions is a good company to use?

While I can't speak to Heritage Web Solutions (or any other company in particular), I would recommend a book that proved invaluable to us in designing a website and working with a web designer. The Ultimate Guide to a Successful Business Website by Jason OConnor.

Best regards,

I would go in the other direction if I were you.  I actually worked for Heritage web solutions(a long time ago).  They do the work without regards to what the client needs.  It's kind of a cookie cutter system they have going there.  On top of that they make you sign a contract for hosting with hosting fees starting at 35 -65 dollars.  If you decide that they are not right for you then you must pay the remaining contract or they will not sign over your domain.

I am more than willing to help you with anything that you need as far as web design goes or anything web related.   PM me with any questions.

I never did any "official" work with Heritage, but like Jnbill said, it's a cookie cutter system.

I found their system very clunky and hard to use and wasn't impressed.

All of that aside, I too would be happy to offer some of my professional services as well. No cookie cutter system. No long term commitments on hosting or high monthly fees.

There are many community web designers out there that you could actually get one designed specifically for you. Look into outsourcing the design, but ensure the designer has the experience for what you want.

Be careful though when hiring someone. There are many scam artists out there that could really take you for your money without you even knowing it until it is too late.

There may be some issues with Heritage... if you do a quick search on Google you'll find some unhappy customers.

If you'd like, I'd be happy to provide you with a quote for your site.

Just email me or PM me the details on what you want.

Your questions involves someone to "design" your site.  That word is key.  Many design firms have little knowledge of design.  If you do it yourself, or if you hire your brother-in-law, you may end up with bad programming and bad design.  If you hire a web design firm, you may get good programming and bad design.

There is nothing more important than making your site look professional.  If it looks cheesy, you will lose more customers/clients than you will gain.  Find someone who understands design first, and programming second.

If you're on a small budget, I highly recommend looking into some good content management systems (CMS) such as Wordpress and paying approx $80 for a good template.  There's a pretty steep learning curve, but you can get magnificent results.

See examples of some of our work using CMS at: MyBlogInstead
