No one likes to talk about it, much less think about it.  But it happens to everyone, from the guy running a site off an old 1998 Gateway to a large business with 50 servers, the inevitable crash.  While you fumble for the backup discs or call tech support, you worry about how long it will take or how much it will cost to get everything back up.  When due to virus, hardware malfunction, or someone dropping coffee in the wrong place, you lose critical information, time, and money not to mention possibly the hardware itself. 

Feel free to talk about any previous, recurring, or current serious computer problems you have.  Odds are someone here may be able to help you fix any issues you have now and prevent future ones.

Here`s a business idea;

Make Linux (especially Ubuntu) more user-friendly and easier to install for the average user . Sell the security, stability, and the fact that it`s free to the consumers by making money on the support aspect and apps. Take down Microsoft in the OS department. That would be nice. Otherwise, I got no problems besides the fact that we are all at the mercy of Microsoft, which forces us to pay for a crappy, unstable, full of security holes OS. To bad that SUN  is running on IIS. Let the creative juices flow in the direction of Linux and the next  OS ideas.

I am there with you. I love linux/ Unix. I think even Lindows "LINSPIRE" (Linux/Windows) system is better than Microsoft OS. IIS is by far the biggest Flaw out there.
Put it like this I am a developer, Installed IE 7.0 Beta... My computer crashed. I had to revert back to 1 hour before the installating. It is a shame how the world is so dependent of Windows Operating systems.
Ever used Lindows? for anyone of you that want an alternative to WINDOWS Operating System try it out. Oh and read this article. I think the whole world needs to know what`s going on behind the scenes.. Microsoft pays to end Lindows Suits

I`ll agree with you that Microsoft isn`t the most efficient company out there but being the big guy also means you have a target on your back.  (A similiar argument is used by us Americans to explain why some countries just don`t seem to like us.)  The biggest OS gets targeted the most by cyber criminals and has the biggest chance of crashing because it has a larger user base.  The average Linux or Mac user isn`t going to start randomly hitting delete in the registry editor, for example, or opening attachments from Viagra spam e-mail.

With that said, I`ve had the severe displeasure of having to tangle with Windows 98, which would crash twice a day just a month after a brand-new clean installation.  Even Windows XP doesn`t have an automated backup tool, which makes it even tougher. 

For example, I was called in to fix someone`s home PC.  Sure enough, half the drivers had been misconfigured and now the sound as well as the printer was not working.  Since it happened to be a Dell, it only took 2 hours (instead of a day) to eliminate most of the causes.  (Dell computers come packed with considerable diagnostic and troubleshooting programs on a partitioned section of the hard drive.)  I went to another computer, downloaded the drivers from Dell.com, and had everything fixed by the following morning.

Now, if it had been a Mac, I would`ve had to either chance a improvised repair or take it into a Mac repairman who`ll charge $50 an hour just to open the tower.

If it would have been a mac you were dealing with.. you never had to fix it. The reason why hackers Love to Break into Windows Security, is because

1. Bill Gates, stated....Windows was the most secure platform back in 1996, he predicted that it would be the Most used OS in the world (he was right) but you know where MS went wrong? Integrating the Internet Browser into the OS. This was their biggest Flaw and they are paying the price of Greed, and domination.

2. Easy to hack into, even with Server Pack 2 release.
3. Mostly used, not to many people know how to protect themselves against intrusions. Users doesn`t care, all they want to do is be able to play music, dowload/share pictures, and of course use it for work.

Next time if its a dell with an on hard-disk back up partition.
Shut the computer off.... Sart it back up while you press the F12 key, and thats it. This applies to all computers with a hard disk back up , by that matter... just hit F12..

No need to download drivers from a secondary source...

Oh man, good thread! My husbands Gateway is so annoying. I`m an ex-Mac person so I only know Windows so-so. When we try to shut his PC down we keep getting this message about "DLL Initialization Failed" or something like that. I`ll have to go upstairs and see if I can get the exact message.

Nuevolution: People can go back and forth debating PC vs. Mac vs. Linux and the debate could never end.  But hey, I do agree that Microsoft made some serious mistakes and missteps.  They stopped integrating MSIE into Windows when 2000 and XP came out, for example.  As for the Dell, the other partition had diagnostics, not a data backup.  I apologize if you misread me.

entreprenerd: Yeah, I`ve had bad experiences with Gateways.  Gateway installs its own software including "Gateway Goback" which is supposed to be an easy way to "reverse" any changes to your hard drive, even complete reformats amazingly.  The only problem is that this feature does not cooperate with Windows XP`s System Restore. 

Your Gateway may no longer have the Goback software, however.  Are you getting the "DLL Initiatiaztion Failed" message on a blue screen during startup or after?  Knowing the exact message code and the OS will also help too.

David, Of course we can go all night about which OS is better...It all depends what you are trying to accomplish. For example between Intel Based and AMD based computers, I think AMD surpasses Intel when it comes to graphics and Music (recording studio). Intel is good when it comes to Office and simple home use. Mac Is for Designers, and Music Lovers, and people that don`t like to have Anti-virus on their computers and need a reliable system..
In order for you to RUN GO back. Disable your System Restore. You can only use one or the other..
David, from my experience, Blue screens only apply to Hardware failures... Right?

Unfortunately, blue screens also take place if there is a software error with XP or a software conflict with another installed program.  They can also take place if a virus has taken a sledgehammer to your vital XP system files.
