So the first thing you need to do is evaluate your interests or hobbies. Is there something about your current or past jobs you like? Or something about a past job you really disliked? Do you have an interesting hobby that comes in handy here-and-there with your friends and family? Well these are the things to consider when you're deciding on a business to start. Make a list of things you're interested in AND things you dislike. The "dislike" list is to help you decide which businesses you DON'T like.

I'm going to disagree with the business plan idea.  

Business plans are BS in today's environment.  EVERYTHING moves WAAAAY too quickly.

 

Better than a plan is an outcome and we fill in the blanks.  Better than actions are principles.  Once we learn principles, we can apply them to different media.  

 

Business plans are almost obsolete, just like the concept of retirement.  They're outdated.... The new world of business is driven by passion because all of the tools are so readily available.  If you don't know how to do something there are 10,000 people online lined up to give you the answer.  

 

I'm not saying that you don't plan and you don't make plans, but business plans are very rigid by nature.  Better than plan is a type of map with your principles laid out and a destination.  

Business is like sailing.  You will go off course and get blown around a lot, but if you know your heading and you use your intuition, you will make regardless of the ever changing environment.
