I submited my website to dmoz in the middle of last year but the page still did not update yet. I am not sure that I can get listed this time.

Most of the webmasters are facing this problem. One should not use any keyword in title while submitting website in DMoz. For Example one should write name of the company in title i.e Bloomtools instead the keyword "website design". I hope this will help.

I looked up who the editor was. I noticed he was from Italy and sent a message in Italian. Asking quite nicely if my site could be reviewed. A week later it was listed. Quite funny I thought.

DMOZ listing is a highly effective service offered by us in which we will be helping websites in having them listed in DMOZ. DMOZ is a highly complicated online directory with a complicated structure including number of categories and sub categories.

Every new search engine that comes along, starts with the ODP as a seed database. Teoma, WiseNut, and others like GigaBlast, started their crawling based on an ODP RDF dump. Other SE's like Fast, Altavista, Inktomi, and Google, have all used the ODP db to seed their database at some point. Add to that the hundreds of smaller topic directories, link lists, and other sites that cherry pick from the ODP.

Yes, very good post. dmoz does indeed need to be treated with respect, and deserves to be. Its ideals are sound and as an editor I would never even dream of abusing it for that reason alone.

The first test I apply when I create a site is basically whether I would accept it if I was editor of its category. If yes, I'm happy. If no, I go back and do some more work.
