Hi all,

I wanted to start a thread for the creatively self-employed. I am a copywriter and just wrote a book on the topic. Looking to meet other creatives here for chit-chat, support, sharing of ideas, and more!

Start posting with an introduction!

I`m on the fence on whether we belong in this category ... probably do, though.

We just launched 2 new sites today ...

Your Soothsayer - A Metaphysical Shop for the Mind, Body and Spirit

and

Karen Leffler, Motivational Speaker

I do writing as well. But when it comes to the web stuff, I`m the geek portion.

I`m here! I`m kind of easing my way towards self-employment. My toes will be in the water in a couple weeks. I will be selling some hand dyed goods at a art fair. I`m excited, yet nervous!

I`m just reading a story involving a publishing company that gets bought out by an overseas conglomerate. The directive comes out from the new owners: "Writers and authors are simply content providers." Then they issue a style book about how to set margins, what typeface, and so forth.

Although it`s a fictional story, it`s close enough to the truth that I think it`s another reason so many creative people are starting their own businesses. I see what happened in the music industry, where Web distribution put the power back into the hands of those musicians who wanted it. I believe the next large area will be with writers---those "content providers."

An unbelievable number of Web sites really suck where it comes to the content. It seems people figure that if they can type, they also can write. Even if they can`t type, they still think they can write. :-) So we`ll see.....but it`s sure nice to know there are people out there making money on their own.

Good point, Craig. Many people think they will save $ by creating their own content. That doesn`t always work out so well in the long run!

This is a fantastic experiement. What happens when one of the world`s best musicians plays for free as a street musician. Do the people value the music? Take 20 minutes and read through this and listen to the wonderful music on the videos. Really interesting. What does this teach us about the value of marketing?
