I had an interesting thought (yes, this happens to old people too) last night concerning the new proposed state constitutional amendment which would go on the November 2008 ballot. If it gets Florida Senate approval it could make Florida the only state in the nation without either a personal income tax or property taxes on primary homes or homesteads. This would mean the the government would be increaing sales tax to make up the property tax short fall. In fact, I could see our sales tax being the largest in the US over time.
I think I like the idea because it better spreads the tax burden more evenly. Remember a large part of our population does not live here year around but they do use our roads and other government funded project without helping us to pay for them. I must also say, it is not perfect without issues that I know will need to be resolved. Regardless of the conception issues, I realized in thinking about this it might have another positive impact.
Could this be a good thing for Internet retailers outside of Florida as it might drive more Florida residents to purchase goods on-line or out-of-state?
