For the past 14 years I have done corporate sales training.  Due to down sizing I am not with the company.  I have great skills in the training and development of sales performance.

How do you start a consulting business?  I am thinking I could perform sales classes for businesses who are not hitting sales targets, but I don`t know how to present my legitimate skills when approaching a business for my services.

How did many of you start your consulting businesses?

Hey wpna49,

I am trying to start a consulting business also and my plan was to make some very eye-catching post cards and send them out to lots of the companies i've worked with.  I was also going to look through job boards and send post cards to those people too.  Basically, send my post cards to as many peoople/companies as I can.

I've been reading this how-to book and letters won't really get opened (would you open one).  Cold Calls are tough but I plan on doing some of that also.

I'm also going to print out some very eye-catching business cards, once I figure out a name and logo  :-)  Then i'll make sure to give them out when I meet new people.

That is my plan... hope it helps.  :)

Any ideas for me?

There are some simple rules for cold calls on clients.  Number one; find out whom you actually need to meet with.  When a business buys maintenance hardware items for example, the chief building engineer may do the purchasing at one business. The purchasing manager may buy the hardware items at another business.

Number two rule, don’t just show up unannounced.  Call first and set up an appointment.  This increases your chance of spending time with your prospective new customer.

It’s also helpful to send an information packet before you call for an appointment.  This allows the customer to review your product line.  You can then include a note that you will call on a certain date to set up the face to face meeting.
