Hey all! Hope everyone is doing well and that you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday!

Please don`t take this the wrong way, but. . .

Did I miss the media blitz? Last year, I remember MSN (my home page) coming up and there being big banners about the Home Based 100. How awesome was that! I was thinking I would see something along those lines this year, I was so excited that we actually placed that I could hardly stand it, especially thinking that we would see the same type of announcements as last year. I told everyone about seeing the adds last year and we have all been watching for them. . .did we miss them?

The info for the contest stated:

"WHAT THE WINNERS WIN
First off, the publicity is priceless. We know that awareness and driving traffic to your business is one of the biggest challenges for any business owner. Winners of the Home-Based 100 find themselves at the center of a media storm that includes recognition on national and local TV, radio, in newspapers and magazines, and on some of the largest, most influential websites on the web, MSN and StartupNation among them."

Did anyone see these ads or stories?

Hi Pam, I heard we got advanced notice as a nice thing, but the real media is being blasted out by Microsoft next week ... there are some trickles like out there, but nothing like what MS can trigger with their big guns.

hey, everyone! back from India and would like to address some of the comments here about the contest.

  • as Chris said, there will be much more exposure ahead as we roll out the PR efforts and the co-publishing activities with MSN.
  • because we had so many contestants this year, we added an "honorable mention" opportunity for those of you who were really impressive but didn`t make the top 100. we had not anticipated this, but added it as a value opportunity for many more (around 2.5 times as many people) than simply the 100. hope you see this as a benefit for many.
  • the votes, as written in the rules qualify you to win a Top Ten Highest Vote Getter, which is linked from the HB100 landing page, so votes correlate directly to that accolade.
  • the votes, as also written in the rules, were simply one factor considered by the judges. As jeff rightly pointed out, many of the 100 winners were very high vote getters, too, and that was duly noted in selections. keep in mind that if the contest were ONLY a popularity contest, it wouldn`t have as much value or street cred.
  • the presence of internal and external judges were included in the original rules.
  • feature articles are currently in development featuring a number of winners and will add considerable promotional value to those included. we will do our best to be inclusive but i`m sure you can appreciate that our editorial staff has only so much bandwidth. we`re doing our best!
  • conversations are underway with a variety of TV, radio, online and print media currently to include winners in their editorial vehicles. We are not in control of who they ultimately decide to feature but are doing our best to bring various winners to their attention on your behalf.
hope this helps shed light on the process and status. i am extremely proud of you, your achievements as entrepreneurs and impressed with your efforts as contestants. many of you realized that this was a great way to excite and engage your constituents, jeff being a shining example.

additional feedback would be welcomed as we`re rolling out additional ranking competitions and wish to make them as constructive and valuable as possible.

congrats again!

Glad you`re back Rich.  What an experience it must have been to be in India, with all that was going on.  Thanks for your update and clarification about the media.  And you`re right, I always keep up with what, Jeff does, and says, as well as many others here.  As Jeff said, if he doesn`t toot his own horn, who will?

Great example to learn from,  I guess we shouldn`t wait to see, if someone else will toot our horn.

Rich and Janie -

Thanks so much for your mentions.  *blushing*  Rich, thanks also for taking the time to respond to some of the issues raised in this forum thread.

For me the greatest benefit of the SuN Home-Based 100 competition was the kick in the rear-end to ramp up the marketing and promotion of my business - while having lots of fun doing so!  The competition itself, and the results, greatly increased my exposure in the home-based business and design industries.

In the past week I sent my Home-Based 100 press release, and one in regards to another design accomplishment, out to my personally created media list of newspapers, magazines and online news resources.  I`m busting at the seams because, soon after sending out the second press release, I received an email from a magazine editor informing me that I had received one of the highest annual accolades in my industry - and I can`t release more information about it until January when it is officially announced!!!  I really don`t think it would have happened if it wasn`t for the Home-Based 100 competition.  (You can be sure there will be a major "Toot!" - or two - in January.)

I appreciate the efforts of the SuN team, and the support of the SuN member community, in making the Home-Based 100 competition an enjoyable and worthwhile event.

Jeff

I am surprised that all of the winners aren`t taking the time to post here.  Start up Nation gave us all a very unique opportunity.  I would love to hear more about what you are doing since you won this contest, as I`m sure many other Sun members would.

Rich, I did think I saw a post that there was a template for a press release, is there?  I think many of us are confused about what to do with wins, honorable mentions etc., and the best way to take advantage of it.

Thanks!
Janie
