Hello,

A friend and I recently started an online retail store.  We are both in college and wanted to start something on the side mostly for fun but wanted to see where it would go.  We`ve been learning a lot about website development and search engine optimization. We would love to get any feedback or suggestions.

First of all, props to Iowa State! I was born in Ames (although the weather on the NC coast is MUCH better).

It`s a good start to a website. It`s not very exciting, and as a potential customer, I`d like to see more in the way of images to make me WANT to send a basket to a loved one. Also, pictures of actual students could really help. People respond to people.

The design and colors could be a bit brighter, more fun and college-y. It sort of reminds me of the graphics a business who was bullied by their kid to get a website (even though they don`t want one) might put up. You are young. Your products are bought for young people. Why not play that up?

Are you using a CMS?

You`ve done a great job so far, gotten an excellent start, and are close to where you could be.

On an non-website note, have you considered a gift basket subscription? One per month for a semester, etc?

Good luck!

Thanks for the feedback. We are using Shopify as our CMS and payment collection.  Its pretty easy to use. Our next stage is to offer a basket subscription.

thanks again.

I think it`s simple, short and to the point. Yes, more pictures likely would be more interesting, but I got the idea instantly. I saw what you sell, clicked a couple of items, saw what`s included, and moved to the checkout. That worked quickly, simply, and had all that I`d expect.

All in all, as said above, it`s a simple site but I think it works. The next big problem will be visibility.

Here`s another idea, one that I`d looked at some time ago and abandoned (lack of interest on my part). You could add a "Basic Toolbox" for apartments, dorm rooms and so forth. It`d include the most basic tools anyone needs in order to change a lightbulb, tighten a screw or bolt, test that current is coming from a socket, and so forth.

:-) Just a thought.

Off to a good start.  Te text on the bottom is just sort of thrown down there.  Perhaps use left or right columns to lighten the load of the footer.
