Back in January I posted looking for a critique of our website and received several good recommendations. We have put most all of the changes in place, moved some things around, added a ton of pictures, tried to get everything consistent on each page, etc. As we noted before, this has all been done with a huge whopping budget of $0 and no prior experience!

If you have a minute, can you re-check us out and see if you see any blatant errors or links not working or just let us know how the overall appearance looks? I also just updated my Marketplace listing on the SuN site and would also welcome any comments on the listing. We are under the food and beverage products, about a half a dozen listings down. Thanks a ton!

Pam,

I didn`t see the site before, so I don`t have anything to compare it to, but here goes:

  • The `best darn dips in the country` - That`s a huge claim to make. According to whom? How do you back up a statement like that?
  • The artwork is really very elementary and doesn`t come off very professional, but a little hokie. If that`s the look you are going for, no biggie
  • The photos aren`t very clear, and that gingham background thingy is too busy for a photo.
  • The navigation should be above the fold, not below it. I have to scroll all the way down .
  • `Allergy` is spelled wrong.
  • Your `About Us` info is, frankly, useless. A person ordering on the net doesn`t care where you are located, why you started the business, etc. The personal story is important to you, but maybe not to your audience.
I just don`t see enough about the products from the homepage to get interested enough to look around for them. And do people really dip a whole, greasy strip of bacon into your dip? It looks that way from the Bac`N Horsey photo. Yuck.

I do have something to compare with, having been there the first go `round. Jeff, the "Best darn dip..." is the result of a flurry of discussion over on the tagline topic. DipLady went round and round, looking for a tagline that picked up attention.

The whole discussion went up and down, and ended up with the tagline NOT because it`s a provable statement. Instead, it`s chutzpah, memorable, and stands out. Point being that if someone wants to run a set of experiments to test the validity of the statement, that`s fine. But they too would have to buy a lot of dips. :-)

Now, as to my impressions of the new site. One thing I`d like to see is the banner at the top being clickable to return to the home page. Since there isn`t a navigation bar on the left, I want a quick way to exit out of what I`m looking at to return to the start of the tour. The little "Home" link in the upper right is too hard to see, too easy to miss.

When I clicked the shelf graphic and went to the Order page, there was no way at all to get back to home without hitting the "Back" button on the browser. This is a "no-no" in elegant design. Nobody should have to ever click the "back" button, but should have internal links to move throughout the site.

This is why people also use tabs along the top, or a menu bar. Why go all the way back to the very start, when all I want is to move "sideways?"

I was quite annoyed that no matter which picture I clicked on the home page, I ended up at the order form. Only then were the pictures taking me to the actual products. As such, the pictures on the home page don`t work for me at all.

Even with a 19" monitor, I had to scroll a full screen to get down to seeing the "Our Dip mixes, Dressings, and spreads" link. That`s too far. So here`s what I`ve been doing as a workaround. I use a Windows PC, so don`t know if it works on a Mac, but I change the display properties to 1024x768 when I want to test the amount of scrolling, and my side-to-side visibility.

My intent is that all important information should be directly visible without any scrolling at all, even on a 17" CRT monitor (tube). Because I`m developing on a 19" LCD at 1280x1024, it`s too easy to make mistakes in font sizes and scrolling areas. (I`m not a developer at all, and use Nvu for only our own site.)

Your fonts are too big. From my own reading, I`ve found that if you can set the default for the entire site (through the <body> tag or styles), it should likely be "small." Then all other fonts should be a % of that. For example, your <p> paragraphs would then be 100% size, meaning the same as "small," which works out to something like 10-11pt. on most monitors, with most browser settings.

I think the "About Us" page is fine, because I believe that page should be set aside for a personal discussion with the online visitor. Many people still are concerned about sending money across the Web, and so having a way to actually "meet" the person at the other end is a good thing. I`d maybe put a nice portrait picture of your "store," or yourself, or something, to put a face to the company. Even if it`s a caricature of yourself, people do tend to relate better when they have a sense of personal interaction.

Summarizing, my biggest complaint is the non-traditional navigation. I saw the various site areas down in the footer only on some pages. I found a "Home" button only on some pages. I expected a navigation bar and tabs, and there were none. I had to work too hard to move through the site, and ended up at the same place too many times from the home page.

Otherwise, I do like the site much better than the original. When I got to the products pages, they worked much better. The expanded thumbnails were a good size, but it would`ve been nice to have a "close" button to return to the products list (instead of the "back" button). :-)

Hi!

I like the tagline!! Very bold. I remember it being suggested here at Start Up nation , I am glad that you used it.The top picture with foods is a nice ad on! I maybe would move the "sign up to win" to top of page , maybe in a colorful callout. The food pictures look amazing and it makes quite a difference! Maybe the navigation can be centered and also at the top of every page. If you need help making buttons, let me know I could help.

I disagree with Jeff`s comment about the "about us page" I as a consumer DO care about you, who you are and where you are from. I Love that you explain wher you started from and how you succeeded! I guess I just am happy for others success and love to hear ablout it...that may just be me, but I don`t think so..I think most folks would love to hear the history of your success.

I have had the opportunity to see your site the first time, the second changes and now where it is and I have to say, the improvements are substantial. I applaud your efforts! I also have had the opportunity to eat your dips...they are delicious!

Keep up your Success. Great Job, especially from someone who has no designing experience.

Thanks a ton you guys for the comments. More good advice to work on. (we need more hours in a day or more days in the week or something. . .

These comments will definitely give us some more things to work on. We are going to attempt some better pictures, some are pretty fuzzy and could be done a bit better, but wow, what an undertaking that was. We will keep plugging away at it. Thanks again for taking a look!

Suzy, have you posted a request for a critique? There`s a forum topic for it, and with your request as a separate topic, it`ll make it easier for folks to keep their comments related directly to your site. :-) Just visit the main Forums link, look under the stuff about the Web, and you`ll see "web critique" topics.

My first impression when I saw your site was that this was an old website that hasn`t been updated in several years.  You need to figure out what look you are going for.  Professional, Country, fun etc... It looks extremely country right now and I don`t know if that is a good selling point for the masses. Look at some examples on this website http://www.cssremix.com of the more modern sites and you may get a better feel of a clean and professional design. Aslo you should think about not using tables the next time you redesign your site and using strictly CSS for layout.

Your first priority should be improving your site navigation, either links on the left side or across the top under the header. I also feel that you have way to many links. If you could expand your design space to 1002px wide most visitors will not have to scroll left and you will be able to shorten the length of the site will adding navigation in a left side bar and content on the right side bar making it possible to eliminate some of the pages.

I also feel that you could use a logo and a completely different header. The drop shadows and the text just don`t show up clean at all.

I feel your color scheme needs some improvements also The purple and dark blue may be a little to harsh for your main text. Also your text is way to large.

The layout of your order page needs some improving also. First when you click on the "order online" link it takes you to a page where the same link is at the bottom. I would just remove it on the "order online" page.  I`m not sure how I would change the overall flow of your order process but I would really analyze how my customers are going to browse my products and see what you can improve.

The links on your "about us" page are not showing up. Looks like you forgot to close several of your <span> tags.

Sorry for all the negatives!!! Just remember.... "Opinions are like A**holes, everybody has one and they all stink"    Good luck with your site.

Brian
